Volvo unveils major tech upgrades for new model year

GOTHENBURG: Volvo Cars has announced a series of technological enhancements set to feature across several models for the upcoming model year.

The upgrades include a comprehensive new-generation user experience and the integration of the ultra-fast Snapdragon Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

The changes would be carried out on the XC40, EX40, EC40, V60 and V90 ranges, with additional updates for select European models.

The new-generation user interface, known as Volvo Car UX, is designed to simplify complex in-car functions by using real-world data and customer feedback.

Already in use on the EX30, EX90 and new XC90, the refreshed system offers a more focused and personalised interaction with the vehicle’s central infotainment display.

Key features include a home screen that prioritises frequently used applications such as maps, media and phone, while a contextual bar dynamically adjusts to show recently used apps.

The driver display has also been updated to provide a larger, clearer view of navigation instructions, contributing to a safer and less distracting driving experience.

The new infotainment system will also benefit from the next-generation Snapdragon Cockpit Platform. This platform dramatically increases the speed and responsiveness of the system, delivering performance improvements that are more than double those of the previous generation and enhancing graphics processing up to 10 times faster.

The upgrade is expected to reduce latency, ensuring that crucial information is displayed promptly to assist drivers. The system, which currently underpins the EX90 and EX30 models, will also be rolled out to the new XC90 SUV.

Volvo has also introduced the Plug & Charge service for the EX30, EX40 and EC40 models in Europe.

This service streamlines the public charging process by automating authentication and billing. Drivers simply connect to a compatible charging station, where the system recognises the vehicle and automatically processes payment, eliminating the need for extra cards or manual verification.

Compatible charging stations can be located using Google Maps via the vehicle’s central display or the Volvo Cars app.

The upgrades are set to be available on the 2026 model year versions of additional models including the S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, V90 and V90 Cross Country.

In addition, Volvo plans to deliver the new user experience via an over-the-air update to millions of vehicles with Google built in, including those produced as early as 2020.

Availability and timing of the upgrades will vary by market, with further details on additional 2026 updates expected to be announced soon.
