Volvo struggles to keep up with EX90 demand, order-taking stopped for now

GOTHENBURG: Demand has outstripped production capacity for the upcoming flagship all-electric EX90, forcing Volvo Cars to suspend bookings until further notice.

Volvo said the first scheduled production run is sold out, but it will re-open again soon.

It said the EX90 that was globally launched last year had received tremendous reception from customers, surpassing its internal projections.

To be built at Volvo's plants in China and US, the future EV flagship will hit showrooms in early 2024 (Update: it will be delayed)

Malaysian customers will have to wait a little longer as the EX90 is only expected to be available at the tail end of next year.

The current XC90 will continue to be sold alongside the EX90 for at least a few good years until its maker decides to phase it out.

Geely-owned Volvo said it got off to 2023 on a stable note, continuing to deliver on its transformation into an electric car company with increased revenues and core profits in the first quarter.

This growth was achieved with only two fully electric models – the XC40 and the C40.

Volvo Cars will introduce more fully electric cars in the coming years, at least one per year until mid-decade, built on next-generation electrical architectures and core computing technology.

In a few months, Volvo will launch a new fully electric small SUV to the world, which will take the company into a new demographic and with a competitive price point.

This new car (some people have started calling it the EX30, which is entirely plausible) will build on the strong customer response to the EX90.

With these two new state-of-the-art SUVs, Volvo would cover both the top end of the premium electric market as well as the entry level premium segment.

Together, they would complement the existing line-up of the fully electric XC40 and C40. This sets the company up for a future with strong growth and improved profitability on fully electric cars.
