Toughest vinyl wrap was a Mercedes, says specialist
By CARSIFU | 04 January 2021
PETALING JAYA: Vinyl wrapping is a cheaper option than having a whole car repainted.
Different cars will require different levels of effort and difficulty to be wrapped.
Other reasons for doing a wrap include protecting the car's paint, covering up a sub-par paintjob or using the car as a promotional vehicle. The wrap can eventually be removed without damaging the underlying paint.
In addition, a wrap can be completed in one to three days, while a full spray-painting typically takes a week or more.
According to Chad MFive of Midnight Protective Films in Troy, Michigan, the hardest project he has ever done was the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen.
It wasn't so much a complex bodywork but the parts to detach and labour involved that makes it so hard. In fact, Chad said the G-Wagen wrap has put him off doing another one for the same model.
In a TikTok video, Chad revealed that almost every exterior panel had to be removed, wrapped, and then replaced in order to do the job properly. In addition, Chad and his team had to make sure they did not deviate from the factory panel gap specifications.
The G-Wagen was white before it became blue after the successful wrap in 2016.
