TotalEnergies Malaysia partners Malaysian Nature Society on mangrove rehabilitation project
By CARSIFU | 27 June 2023PETALING JAYA: TotalEnergies Malaysia has initiated a mangrove rehabilitation project in partnership with the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) by planting 250 trees in PMU 500kV Jimah East (JMHE), Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.
This is part of TotalEnergies Malaysia’s commitment to contribute towards sustainability and low carbon economy push in the country.
Mangroves are well known to have both environmental and economic benefits.
They not only serve as good carbon absorption and also offer natural flood prevention and are important habitats for wildlife.
The rich biodiversity of mangrove forests then offers socio-economic benefits across fisheries and tourism industries.
TotalEnergies Malaysia managing director Jennifer Li said mangrove forests are important in sustaining community livelihoods, providing a habitat for wildlife to thrive in, and are fundamental to mitigating climate change impacts as well as offsetting carbon emissions.
“Through our collaboration with MNS, we hope to energise the lives and communities of those reliant on mangrove forests for economic, social and environmental benefits. Having said that, this mangrove rehabilitation project will be an annual initiative as part of our sustainable development commitments,” she said.
TotalEnergies is a global multi-energy company that places sustainable development of the climate and the community in its operations and activities.
“As we collectively move forward into a low carbon economy, it is important to also take into consideration the resilience of the environment and whether they have the capability to support the transition that we are making,” Li said.
Aside from environmental conservation initiatives, TotalEnergies Malaysia remains committed to helping Malaysia achieve its carbon neutrality goals by 2060 through the implementation of low-carbon energy and mobility solutions, supporting the increase in renewable energy capacity and investing in carbon sinks as well as carbon neutrality projects.
