The first solid-state batteries are coming soon to China's auto industry
By ETX DAILY UP | 28 November 2024BEIJING: Today, China is at the cutting edge of electric battery technology, as well as being the world's leading producer.
The next generation of solid-state batteries is already on the way, promising to revolutionise the sector.
The Chinese group SAIC, via its MG brand, is set to be the first to launch vehicles equipped with this new technology.
Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, which use a liquid electrolyte to transport ions between the anode and the cathode, solid-state batteries use a solid material, such as a polymer or ceramic.
This innovation offers major advantages.
Firstly, these batteries will benefit from a higher energy density, enabling more energy to be stored in a smaller space, and thus significantly increasing vehicle range.
Secondly, they should be more resistant to deterioration over time, for a longer life cycle than current batteries. The icing on the cake is that they also promise to be faster to charge.
Finally, in terms of safety, the absence of a liquid electrolyte considerably reduces the risk of short-circuiting, and hence of fire.
MG is set to become the first carmaker to equip its next models with solid-state batteries, a technology that promises to transform the electric vehicle industry.
Mass production of this type of battery is scheduled for 2026. Earlier this year, IM Motors, another SAIC Motor subsidiary, brought out a sedan with a semi-solid battery - a major first. With a liquid content of just 10%, this battery offers a range of over 1,000km.
But for the automotive industry, there are still a few hurdles to overcome, as these batteries are very expensive to produce and manufacturing remains complex.
In addition to Chinese manufacturers, however, other brands have already indicated that they are working on this technology, including Toyota, Nissan and Volkswagen. Their models equipped with solid-state batteries could be out by 2030.
The advent of this new technology should usher in a new era of electric mobility, with the promise of electric cars that are more reliable, and which have a longer range than ever before.
