Tesla finally entering Malaysia?
By CARSIFU | 01 February 2023
PETALING JAYA: Tesla entered Singapore in 2021 and Thailand last year. Malaysians may not have long to wait as signs are showing that it could officially set up shop in Malaysia in the not-too-distant future.
In a regulatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Tesla named Tesla Sdn Bhd as one of its subsidiaries in its FY2022 annual report.
Locally, a Companies Commission of Malaysia filing in October last year revealed that Tesla Sdn Bhd's business activity were the wholesale and retail of new motor vehicles; other service activities incidental to land transportation; and maintenance and repair of motor vehicles.
Tesla Sdn Bhd was formerly known as Tesla Services Sdn Bhd and was set up in Penang in 2017 to serve as a regional hub for the US company's accounting and finance activities in the Asia Pacific region as well as Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
It didn't last long and was shuttered by 2020 and reborn as simply Tesla Sdn Bhd last year.
Whether Tesla will set up shop in 2023 or later remains to be seen as it has not mentioned any market expansion in its latest note to investors.
