Taxi, rental car licence applications open from April 18 to June 30
By THE STAR | 15 April 2022KUALA LUMPUR: Applications for taxi and rental car licences will be open from April 18 to June 30 to meet public demand, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The Transport Minister said the demand was fuelled by people who want their own taxi licences – including existing taxi drivers.
"In an effort to boost the taxi industry, the Transport Ministry through the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) has agreed that the taxi and rental car class licence applications will be open to the public under 'sole proprietorship and partnership'," he said in a statement today.
Dr Wee said applications will be open at all Apad offices and counters at state Road Transport Department (JPJ) branches.
"For now, the approval quota for the licences is set at 1,000 licences this year (2022).
"Apad will analyse all applications after the closing date and if the number of eligible applications that meet the requirements exceeds the quota, they will reconsider the quota limit.
"The application conditions this time are different as Apad has abolished the requirement of one to three years' experience driving a taxi or rental car under the Taxi Industry Transformation Programme," he said.
He added that however, other conditions are still imposed to ensure applicant participation remains competitive and of quality to provide the best service to passengers.
"The opening of this application is expected to help current taxi drivers have their own individual licences as well give the opportunity to new drivers, especially the younger generation, to join the public transport sector," he said.
