Suzuki Jimny 5-door launched, priced at RM199,950

KUALA LUMPUR: The Suzuki Jimny 5-door joins the Jimny 3-door version in Malaysia following its launch today.

Available only in a single variant, it is priced at RM199,950 (on-the-road excluding insurance). The 3-door version is priced from RM158,900.

The latest Jimny arrives as CBU from India, and it is the first time it is offered with 5 doors.

This fourth-generation Jimny is essentially an extended version of the 3-door Jimny, being 505mm longer and having a wheelbase that's 340mm more. The 3-door version is CBU from Japan.

It uses the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine as the smaller Jimny and the same 4-speed automatic.

The fourth-gen 3-door version arrived in Malaysia in Sept 2021.

Distributor Naza Eastern Motors targets to sell 100 units of the 5-door Jimny this year.

It has shipped in around 50 units of the 4WD vehicle as ready stock to complement the 50 order received to date.

Five of the first customers will take delivery of the new Jimny at the launch venue later today.

The 1.5-litre engine features idle start stop technology, delivering 100hp at 6,000rpm and 130Nm of torque at 4,000rpm.

This engine is paired with the Allgrip Pro 4WD system, 4-speed low range transfer gear, and LSD Traction Control Brake, providing ample power and control for off-road driving.

The Allgrip Pro 4WD system allows for easy shifting between 2H and 4H modes, enhancing adaptability on rough terrains. For extreme off-road situations, the 4L mode enables the vehicle to tackle challenging conditions.

The Jimny 5-door integrates modern features such as LED projector headlamps, a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, and advanced safety features while maintaining a minimalist interior design.

The interior of the 4-seat Jimny includes basic black shades to minimise distractions, with silver inserts highlighting functional elements. The dashboard and centre console are designed for driver awareness, and the vehicle offers substantial boot space with a wide rear opening for easy luggage loading.

Safety is a key focus, with the Jimny equipped with six airbags, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, ESP, and other features like Hill Hold Control and Hill Descent Control. The vehicle also includes side-impact door beams, Isofix child seat anchorages, seatbelt pretensioners, and a rear-view camera, all built on Suzuki’s ladder frame for superior safety.

The 5-door Jimny measures 3,850mm in length, offering 300mm more space than the 3-door version. This additional space results in a longer wheelbase, increased cabin space, and more legroom and luggage capacity.

As with the 3-door Jimny, the 5-door version will spin off special editions from 2025.

“The introduction of the 5-door Jimny underscores our commitment to diversifying our product portfolio with profitable niche models that meet evolving automotive trends," said Naza Automotive Group CEO Rizal Jailan.

"This move aligns with our broader strategy to solidify our market presence and cater to the increasing demand for compact, versatile SUVs in Malaysia.”

He also said a small number of Jimny might be offered with a 5-speed manual transmission option at a later time though he pointed out that most Malaysian customers prefer the automatic gearbox.

The launch event also featured an exhibition showcasing the evolution of the Suzuki Jimny from its inception.

The first generation, introduced in 1970, set the foundation for the rugged, compact off-roader. This was followed by the second generation in 1981, which brought enhanced durability and performance.

The third generation, launched in 1998, introduced more modern features while retaining the Jimny's distinctive character. The fourth generation, which began in 2018, continued to build on this legacy with advanced technology and refined design.

Australia is the biggest overseas market for the Jimny, with the 3-door variant being extremely popular.

Naza Eastern Motors plans to implement targeted marketing campaigns and strategic partnerships to enhance brand visibility and reach new customer segments. It will also expand its dealership network in the coming months with Penang, Batu Caves, Kuantan and Kuching.

As to the oft-asked question on local assembly, Naza Eastern Motors said it would consider that if the sales volume justify the heavy investment.

With Suzuki now jumping on the electric mobility bandwagon like other car makers, it's expected to introduce electric models in Malaysia towards the end of 2025, widening its product line-up.
