RM312mil needed to repair flood-damaged roads nationwide
By BERNAMA | 12 December 2024BUTTERWORTH: The total cost to repair roads nationwide damaged by the first wave of floods during the north-east monsoon has been estimated at RM312.1mil as of Wednesday.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said this comprises RM247mil for federal road maintenance, RM40.3mil for federal slope repairs, and RM24.8mil for state roads.
However, he said the cost has yet to be finalised and the ministry is still assessing the extent of the damage and repair costs.
“The final cost will be submitted soon. My team and I have been on the ground helping those affected by the floods. Earlier, we activated disaster operation rooms at the ministry level.
“Based on experience, the ministry is better prepared for the floods this year," he told reporters after launching the National Technical Profession Day (HPTN) 2024 celebration at the Picca Convention Centre in Butterworth Arena here today.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and Penang infrastructure, transport and digital committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari were also present.
In conjunction with HPTN 2024, Nanta urged technical professionals nationwide to ensure projects are completed according to specifications and within set timelines without requiring extensions of time, in line with the government's agenda to curb wastage and resource mismanagement.
“Budget 2025, totalling RM423bil, has allocated RM88bil for development expenditure, including RM2bil in contingency funds.
“A significant portion is earmarked for national infrastructure and facilities, which require substantial involvement and contributions from technical professionals.
"Their expertise in analysis, problem-solving and providing professional advice is crucial to delivering the best services,” he said.
Nanta also emphasised the importance of technical professionals mastering English, communication skills, project management, problem-solving, creative thinking, innovation and leadership, especially as Malaysia attracts increasing investments in technology-based industries.
He also said HPTN 2024 successfully brought together prominent corporate entities, including engineering firms and highway and road maintenance concessionaires, showcasing their products and services at 37 exhibition booths.
