KUALA LUMPUR: The refreshed Tesla Model Y is launched in Malaysia today.
It is offered in two variants: Rear-wheel drive and Long Range (all-wheel drive), with prices starting from RM195,450 and RM242,450 respectively.
Prices are around RM4,400 more than before.
Tesla Malaysia opened orders for the updated model in Malaysia and Singapore last month.
The new Model Y is shipped in from the automaker's plant in Shanghai, which is ramping up production of the car from today.
Tesla Malaysia said it has received about 300 bookings so far and waiting period is up to May.
The Launch Series of the Model Y are offered in limited numbers, with Tesla Malaysia regional manager for sales & delivery Karen Teo saying it could last until March.
The Launch Series gain up to six items at no extra charge: vegan suede for black interior; "Launch" charging console wordmark; doorsill plate wordmark; puddle light badge; rear liftgate badge; and Acceleration Boost (only for Long Range variant).
The Model Y debuted in 2020 and is still in its first generation. Tesla's only other model sold in Malaysia is the Model 3 sedan.
Tesla is increasingly facing criticism for its ageing product lineup.
While the company remains a dominant force in the EV market, it has not introduced an all-new mass-market model in several years, relying instead on updates to existing vehicles.
Although the US carmaker still leads in EV technology and software, its reliance on an ageing lineup without major redesigns could make it vulnerable as competitors - mainly from China - catch up in efficiency, design and affordability.
