Refreshed 2025 Tesla Model Y offered in Limited Launch Edition, prices start from RM196K

PETALING JAYA: The refreshed 2025 Tesla Model Y is now offered in Malaysia in the Launch Edition model, and a new Glacier Blue exterior colour.

The new Model Y is available to order on Tesla’s website.

It comes in two variants: rear-wheel drive (RWD) and long range (LR), with prices starting from RM195,450 and RM242,450 respectively.

Tesla's Model Y and Model 3 are fully imported from its plant in Shanghai, China.

The Model Y RWD variant offers 466km of travel range (WLTP) and its 0-100kph sprint is done in 5.9 seconds, onwards to a 201kph top speed.

The Model Y LR variant offers all-wheel drive, 551km of travel range (WLTP) and its 0-100kph sprint is done in 4.3 seconds (Launch Edition only), onwards to a 201kph top speed.

It comes with a bespoke cyber design - the new cross car lightbar at the front and the all-new rear light bar and tailgate are inspired by the Cybercab and Cybertruck respectively.

The Launch Edition includes a customised launch badge at the rear, puddle light badge and doorsill plate ‘launch’ wordmark that welcomes you every time when entering the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the charging console and the floor mat comes with a launch design with silver accents, and an all-black vegan suede interior trim.

There's also a noticeably quieter cabin with double-layer glass for all windows and the panoramic glass roof which features silver-coated glass to further reduce the UV rays and heat entering the cabin.

Newly designed wheels and a rear diffuser are introduced to reduce air resistance and optimise the lift balance between the front and rear wheels.

This enhances rear-wheel downforce delivering a quieter, more stable, and highly efficient experience at high speeds.

Signature features in the Model 3, such as ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, and second-row display for passengers are also available in the new Model Y.

Customers can now easily press a button to adjust the position or fold down the rear passenger seats.

China launch

The new Model Y was launched today in China as Tesla hoped the refreshed model would help it regain market share taken by rivals such as Xiaomi.

The new Model Y is priced in China from 263,500 yuan (RM162,000),5.4% more expensive than the previous version in China.

Deliveries in China are set to begin in March, subject to regulatory approval and Tesla was also taking orders for the SUV in many other Asia Pacific markets (Malaysia included).

Details about Tesla's plans for the revamped version in North America and Europe were not immediately available, according to a Reuters report.

Tesla was the largest maker of battery electric cars in China in 2020 but Chinese EV rivals have increasingly made inroads, winning over customers with snazzy smart car features.

Even with a revamped Model Y, analysts told Reuters it was doubtful that Tesla will regain the momentum it used to have in China.

Xiaomi will launch its first SUV, the YU7, in June or July, and Xpeng plans to launch the G7.

Both models share "similar features with the Model Y, such as a youthful design and technological functions, making them direct competitors," said Shaochen Wang, a China-based auto analyst at Counterpoint.

Wang also noted that Tesla had yet to finalise the full rollout of its advanced driver assistance software, which is called "Full Self-Driving", in China.

That could put it on the back foot against several Chinese EV auto brands which have also developed advanced smart driving features.

Tesla plans to launch a six-seat variant of the Model Y in China late this year, sources have previously said.
