Puspakom turns new chapter: From a monopoly to licensee in vehicle inspections

SHAH ALAM: Following the end of its concession as the sole provider of vehicle inspection services on Aug 31, Puspakom Sdn Bhd begins life as Malaysia’s first vehicle inspection licensee company on Sept 1.

Puspakom CEO Mahmood Razak Bahman said the award of this operational license opens up opportunities for Puspakom to become a more sustainable and competitive entity within Malaysia's automotive sector.

“Puspakom is proud to be the nation’s first vehicle inspection licensee, and will continue to adhere to our mission of making road transportation safer through vehicle inspections," he said.

"As we prepare for a competitive landscape, we have developed a comprehensive future plan for improvements to equip us better in the future. This includes upgrades in customer service, new products and services as well as deploying artificial intelligence (AI) to make Puspakom ready for competition.”

Mahmood also said Puspakom would leverage its 30 years of experience, combined with technology, to stay as the preferred choice for customers throughout the country.

“Competition means we must be better than the other company, and Puspakom’s three decades of experience is unmatchable. When we combine this with AI, we can make our service more efficient. Efficiency means we can return productivity hours to the customers, while we make available more inspection slots to the market,” he said.

“In the early days, an inspection took more than 75 minutes. Today, with the deployment of technology as well as better work flow, on average we complete the inspection in 34 minutes. Puspakom remains committed to providing the best-in-class service despite now facing new players in the vehicle inspection industry,” he added.

As part of efforts to improve services, Puspakom has started 16-hour operations in a trial run today at its Glenmarie branch in Shah Alam. It now operates two shifts, beginning at 7.00am and ending at 11pm.

”The pilot 16-hour operating hours is part of our effort to improve service delivery. The pilot aims to gather data on operational challenges and customer acceptance," said Mahmood.

"While Glenmarie only serves the private car segment, it will enable us to glean necessary data and make improvements before deploying this (extended hours plan) further across more branches.”

The longer operating hours will be introduced in key market areas upon successful completion of the pilot and an assessment of the data collected.

The pilot phase in Glenmarie is set to end on Jan 3, 2025.
