Proton X70 reclaims top spot for C-segment SUV sales
By CARSIFU | 09 December 2024SUBANG JAYA: National carmaker Proton registered sales of 12,194 units (domestic and export) in November.
This brought the company’s year to date (YTD) total sales volume to 137,751 units with Proton retaining its position as the second most popular brand in the national sales rankings.
Forecast market share for the month is 18.2% leading to a YTD figure of 18.8% for the whole of 2024.
Despite sales volume for the Malaysian automotive sector contracting in November, the YTD TIV is still nearly 10,000 units more compared to the same point in 2023.
With an estimated 731,026 units sold thus far, the market projects to achieve a new record level for a second successive year as it breaks through the 800,000 units barrier, positioning Malaysia as the second highest volume passenger vehicle market in ASEAN this year.
With only one month remaining in 2024, the Proton X70 has reclaimed the top spot for C-segment SUV sales.
The current facelifted 2025 model was launched on 15 August this year and features revised exterior styling, new interior equipment, upgraded ADAS level 2 safety technology and most importantly, has the same price as its predecessor. These upgrades along with enhancements to combustion efficiency and thermal management, has improved fuel efficiency by 4%, which is now rated at 7.3 litres/100 km.
Sales of the Proton X70 in November increased by 7.7% month-on-month to 1,065 units, bringing its YTD total to 7,536 units.
Meanwhile its bigger brother, the Proton X90, retained its position as market leader for D-segment SUVs with a 13.1% month-on-month growth to 277 units, contributing to a YTD sales total of 3,246 units.
The third model to lead its segment is the Proton S70, which celebrated its first anniversary on 28 November.
Fresh from its maiden race outing in the 2024 Sepang 1000km, 1,312 units were sold last month, powering the sedan back to the sales lead in its segment and bringing total YTD sales to 17,512 units.
As for the brand’s most popular SUV, the Proton X50, 1,911 units were delivered last month bringing YTD sales to 21,033 units, making it the most popular model in its segment.
Since its launch in October 2020, the B-segment SUV has become the fastest selling SUV in Malaysia, and it remains as the best-selling model in its segment year-to-date.
Finally, sales of other Proton models remained strong. The Proton Saga achieved 5,916 sales to bring its YTD total to 66,094 units and positioning it to breach the 70,000 total sales mark for a second year in a row.
Its B-segment sedan sister, the Proton Persona, registered 1,394 units in November for a total YTD figure of 17,325 units while Proton’s B-segment hatchback, the Proton Iriz, sold 319 units to bring its total sales to date to 4,762 units.

Proton Saga shipments to Egypt help set new export benchmark for the year The Proton Saga is the best-selling model domestically and internationally.
A total of 480 units of the left-hand drive (LHD) Proton Saga were exported to Egypt last month, a remarkable 300% growth compared with the 120 units shipped to the country a month prior.
To-date, 2,203 units of the Proton Saga have been exported this year, leading to total exports volume for 2024 already exceeding the number for the whole of 2023.
To recap export activities, after the first shipment of CKD packs to Egypt on 9 September this year, Proton’s partner in the country then opened a new CKD plant to assemble the Proton Saga in Cairo, targeting to market it in the Egyptian domestic and other Middle East markets.
Together with sales growth in other countries cumulative export sales currently stand at 3,652 compared to a total figure of 3,636 units last year.
