Proton starts building RM82mil EV plant

TANJUNG MALIM: Proton today started construction of its electric vehicle (EV) plant here.

The RM82 million plant is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Once ready, it will produce multiple models based on the Global Modular Architecture (GMA) platform
starting with the Proton e.MAS 7, the first EV model from a Malaysian automotive brand.

The site would initially produce 20,000 units of cars per year. In the next phase, Proton would ramp up production capacity to 45,000 units per year subject to demand in Malaysia and overseas.

The production line features a high degree of automation in its operations by leveraging on robotics, cloud based plant management, industrial internet-of-things (IOT) and technologies synonymous with IR 4.0.

Proton estimated the new plant would lead to the creation of over 200 new jobs, specialising in EV industrialisation and technical services.

This is before the positive knock-on effect on the parts vendors in the area.

“Once completed, this new factory will focus on producing the Proton e.MAS 7 as well as future NEV offerings as Proton expands its model range," said Proton chief executive officer Dr Li Chunrong.
