Porsche unveils new 911 with hybrid powertrain

STUTTGART: Porsche has significantly upgraded the iconic 911 sports car with the introduction of the new 911 Carrera GTS, the first street-legal 911 equipped with a super-lightweight performance hybrid system.

This 992.2 model, alongside the newly revamped 911 Carrera, features innovative powertrain systems, enhanced aerodynamics, a redesigned interior, and expanded connectivity options.

The new 911 Carrera GTS boasts a 3.6-litre six-cylinder boxer engine combined with a newly developed T-Hybrid system. This innovative hybrid setup includes an electric exhaust gas turbocharger with an integrated electric motor that instantaneously increases turbocharger speed and boost pressure.

The electric motor also functions as a generator, producing up to 11 kW (15 PS) of electric power from the exhaust gas flow. This system eliminates the need for a second turbocharger, allowing for a more dynamic and responsive power delivery.

The powertrain includes a permanent magnet synchronous motor integrated into the new, more powerful eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK).

This motor supports the boxer engine with up to 150 Nm of extra torque and provides a power boost of up to 40 kW. The high-voltage system powers a compact battery storing up to 1.9 kWh of energy and operates at 400 V, contributing to a minimal weight increase of just 50kg over its predecessor.

The 911 Carrera GTS delivers a total system output of 398 kW (541 PS) and 610 Nm of torque, significantly enhancing its performance capabilities.

It accelerates from 0 to 100kph in just 3.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 312kph.

The 911 Carrera features a revamped 3.0-litre twin-turbo boxer engine with a power output of 290 kW (394 PS) and 450 Nm of torque, achieving 0 to 100kph in 4.1 seconds (3.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono package) and a top speed of 294kph.

Porsche has streamlined the exterior of the new 911 with targeted updates to improve aerodynamics and performance. The 911 Carrera GTS features new model-specific bumpers, standard matrix LED headlights, and adaptive front diffusers. The GTS version also comes with rear wheel steering as standard for the first time; this increases stability at high speeds and reduces the turning circle.

The redesigned rear end includes a light strip with an integrated 'PORSCHE' logo, a rear grille with five fins per side, and a repositioned number plate. The 911 Carrera models come standard with 21-inch rear wheels and 20-inch front wheels, with various wheel designs available.

The interior of the new 911 combines traditional Porsche design with modern technology. The cockpit features a fully digital 12.6-inch instrument cluster for the first time with customisable views, including a Classic display inspired by traditional Porsche dials.

The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system is operated via a high-resolution 10.9-inch central display, offering improved customisability and connectivity features. A QR code significantly simplifies the logging-on process to the PCM with the Porsche ID.

Apple CarPlay is more deeply integrated into the car. If desired, it displays information in the instrument cluster and enables the operation of vehicle functions directly in the Apple ecosystem, for example via the Siri voice assistant. For the first time, video streaming is also optionally available while parked.

Apps such as Spotify and Apple Music can be used as native apps in the PCM without a connected smartphone.

Apple CarPlay integration allows for the operation of vehicle functions through the Siri voice assistant, and video streaming is available while parked.

The new 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera GTS are available to order now.

The 911 Carrera is offered as a Coupé and Cabriolet with rear-wheel drive, while the 911 Carrera GTS includes all-wheel drive and the Targa body variant.

Both models come standard with Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission.
