One death every two hours due to motorbike accidents in Malaysia, says JPJ

JOHOR BARU: A death occurs every two hours due to motorcycle accidents in Malaysia, says the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

Its senior enforcement director Datuk Lokman Jamaan(pic) said the worrying trend was based on statistics gathered over the past two years.

"In 2022, a total of 6,080 individuals were killed in road accidents nationwide. The number went up to 6,344 last year.

"About 4,000 of these deaths are those involving motorcycles. This means an average of one person is killed every two hours, and this is a very worrying trend," he said.

He said this at a press conference during a special operation in conjunction with Chinese New Year and the holiday season at Skudai Toll here last night.

On the operation, Lokman said the department checked some 768,276 individuals during the nationwide operation and issued a total of 165,553 summonses for various offences.

"About 26% of the offences or a total of 42,505 of the summonses issued are for driving or riding motorcycles without a licence.

"We also issued a total of 17,762 summonses to foreigners for various traffic violations, including driving lorry without a vocational licence," he said.
