Nissan's Nismo celebrates turning 40 with special showcase


YOKOHAMA: Nissan marked the 40th anniversary of Nismo on Sept 17.

Formed on Sept 17, 1984 as Nissan Motorsport International Co. Limited, Nismo, is the in-house tuning, motorsports, and performance division of Nissan. The brand symbolises the company’s dedication to performance, both on the racetrack and on public roads.

A special exhibition at its headquarters here is being held to mark the anniversary.

Running until Oct 15, the exhibit showcases iconic Nismo models, including the rare Nismo 270R and 400R, alongside legendary racing cars like the Nissan R390 GT1, which placed third in the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Daytona-winning Nissan R91CP.

Nismo's current domestic models, such as the Ariya Nismo and Fairlady Z Nismo, are also on display.

Nissan's motorsports division head Takao Katagiri said Nismo’s remains committed to translating racetrack technology into road cars. He highlighted the importance of the "track to road" ethos, with ongoing efforts in Super GT and Formula E racing programs, and expressed Nismo’s ambition to expand globally with more performance models.

The celebration will continue with the 2024 Nismo Festival at Fuji International Speedway on Dec 1, marking the milestone anniversary with a tribute to Nismo’s racing heritage and high-performance vehicle evolution.
