LOS ANGELES: Toyota's GR Corolla now comes with an 8-speed Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT) with paddle shifters, expanding options for both manual enthusiasts and those preferring focused handling.
The new transmission allows for rapid gear shifts and is optimised for sporty driving, adapting to driver inputs for a professional driving feel. It was first made available in the updated GR Yaris.
The six-speed manual is still offered.
The 8-speed automatic advancement comes shortly after the GR Corolla's 2022 debut, following a challenge by Akio Toyoda to enhance the vehicle further.
Tested on rigorous courses like Fuji International Speedway, the GR Corolla now boasts increased engine torque and improved suspension components, promising an impressive driving experience.
Exterior updates include a redesigned front bumper for better cooling and aerodynamics, and new trim finishes inside provide a sporty vibe.
The new DAT enhances performance by allowing drivers to focus on acceleration, braking, and steering, making sports driving accessible to a broader audience.
The transmission's software anticipates optimal gear shifts based on driver inputs, providing a seamless driving experience. Developed with input from circuit and rally drivers, the DAT's close gear ratio and optimised shift points maximise engine power delivery.
The GR Corolla offers four drive modes: Sport, Normal, ECO, and Custom. The Sport mode, extensively tested worldwide, ensures thrilling performance.
For 2025, the hot hatch's turbocharged 1.6-litre 3-cylinder engine delivers 300hp and 400Nm (+30Nm) of torque.
To maintain optimal performance, the DAT models feature a standard automatic transmission fluid cooler, with an optional sub-radiator for enhanced cooling.
The GR Corolla's suspension system has been refined for improved traction and stability, with added rebound springs and enhanced rear coils and stabilisers.
The rear axle's trailing arm mounting point has been adjusted to reduce squat during acceleration, enhancing drive force response and stability during cornering.
The GR-FOUR All-Wheel-Drive system, developed with the Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team, optimises traction and control by adjusting torque distribution across the wheels.
Drivers can select from Normal, Gravel, or Track AWD modes to suit different driving conditions. Front and rear Torsen Limited-Slip Differentials (LSD) are standard, improving cornering performance and grip.
The 2025 GR Corolla's redesigned front bumper accommodates cooling components while improving aerodynamics. The brake ducts have been enhanced for better air intake, and an air curtain construction helps manage airflow around the tires for improved handling stability. New exterior colour options include Black, Ice Cap, Heavy Metal, and Supersonic Red.
Inside, the GR Corolla features an eight-inch digital gauge cluster and the Toyota Audio Multimedia system with an eight-inch touchscreen. The system includes voice activation, cloud-based navigation with real-time updates, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Additional connected services include a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Remote Connect, offering a range of safety and convenience features.
The GR Corolla comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which includes advanced safety features like Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, and Automatic High Beams.
The updated GR Corolla will go on sale towards the end of 2024, with detailed pricing to be announced later.
As a global model, it will be made available outside Japan. It's only a matter of time before it wings its way to Malaysia.
