LONDON: Just as Mercedes is working on an all-electric S-Class, BMW is also executing a similar plan for its luxury limo.
According to UK-based Drivingelectric.com, the electric 7 Series may be badged the i7 and has already been spotted undergoing testing, wrapped in heavy camouflage.
The next-generation electric 7 Series will use BMW’s fifth-generation electric drivetrain, joining the i3 and iX3, and the forthcoming i4 and iNEXT models in the brand’s "I" range.
BMW will have 25 electrified models on the roads by 2023 with half of them fully electric.
Although the styling is hard to make out, BMW's trademark 'Hofmeister kink' in the C-pillar is there. A large grille is retained for identity purpose although it's unnecessary as there's no engine to cool.
This all-electric 7 Series is still in the early stage of development and is unlikely to be ready until at least 2022 or 2023. BMW previously confirmed its intention to offer its next-generation 7 Series with a pure-electric powertrain.
In a release about responsibility and sustainability, the maker also confirmed zero-emissions versions of the smaller 5 Series and X1 SUV are on the way.
