New BMW 5 Series Touring touts more space and performance, electric version debuts

MUNICH: The upcoming release of the sixth-generation BMW 5 Series Touring marks a significant evolution in the premium upper mid-range segment.

Scheduled to debut in Germany, select European markets, and Japan in May 2024, followed by additional global releases in June, the new 5 Series Touring promises to deliver a blend of performance, elegance, and eco-consciousness.

The exterior design of the vehicle emphasises stretched proportions and modern interpretations of BMW's iconic features, while the interior boasts a forward-thinking cockpit design centered around the 12.3-inch BMW Curved Display.

Compared to its predecessor, the new 5 Series Touring is 97mm longer (5,060mm), 32mm wider (1,900mm) and 17mm higher (1,515mm). The new 5 Series Touring has the longest wheelbase in its class, increasing by 20mm to 2,995mm.

Notably, the standard vegan upholstery is BMW's claim to sustainable luxury.

Optional equipment includes BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery in several bi-colour variants. Other highlights of the optional equipment programme include the panoramic glass roof and the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with up to 18 loudspeakers.

The new 5 Series Touring offers more space and noticeably more leg, shoulder and elbow room, especially in the rear, as well as optimised acoustic comfort.

A wider luggage compartment opening combined with a low sill makes it easy to stow large items of luggage.

Regardless of their drive technology, all variants of the new 5 Series Touring have a luggage compartment volume that can be expanded from 570 to up to 1,700 litres.

In addition to the automatic tailgate operation, remote unlocking of the 40 : 20 : 40 split rear seat backrest from the luggage compartment is also standard.

Storage compartments under the load compartment floor provide space for the luggage compartment partition net, luggage compartment cover and charging cable for the all-electric and plug-in hybrid models.

Under the hood, the 5 Series Touring offers a range of powertrain options, including highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrid systems, and the debut of an all-electric variant, the i5 Touring.

This lineup caters to various consumer preferences while prioritising fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness.

The i5 Touring, available in two versions, boasts impressive performance and long-distance capability, supported by BMW's comprehensive charging infrastructure.

The new diesel engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology enhance the lineup's efficiency.

On the road, the BMW 5 Series Touring promises a balanced driving experience, blending sportiness with comfort. With advanced suspension technology and optional performance packages, drivers can expect precise handling and dynamic performance.

Inside the cabin, the new BMW 5 Series Touring integrates cutting-edge connectivity features, including 5G mobile antennas, digital services, and in-car gaming options.

The updated BMW iDrive system ensures seamless operation and access to a range of personalised digital services.

The 5 Series Touring software is upgradeable over-the-air.

Prices start from €62,000 (RM318,000) for the 520d and goes up to €100,000 (RM513,000) or more for the top i5 M60 if options are ticked.
