PETALING JAYA: The MG brand makes a comeback to Malaysia with the launch today of its MG4 and ZS EV.
Much of the details about the two models are already known following a media preview last month that also led to several public previews of the cars in the past few weeks at a mall and MG dealerships around the peninsula.
The MG4 hatchback comes in four variants and prices are: MG4 Standard at RM103,999; MG4 Lux at RM128,999; MG4 Lux Extended Range at RM148,999 and MG4 XPower at RM158,999.
The ZS EV, a B-segment SUV, will be offered in only one variant, priced at RM125,999.
The first batch of 200 cars - 10% ZS EV and 90% MG4 - have arrived from China. Both electric vehicles (EVs) are available immediately with no waiting period.
MG4 variants
MG4 (XPOWER, 64 kWh, 385km)
MG4 (Lux Extended Range, 77 kWh, 520km)
MG4 (Lux, 64 kWh, 435km)
MG4 (Standard, 51 kWh, 350km)
Sole MG ZS EV
MG ZS EV (Lux, 51 kWh, 320km)
Both models come with 7 year/150,000km vehicle warranty and 8 year/180,000km mileage battery warranty (whichever comes first).
In addition, MG provides a 1-to-1 battery warranty should the battery state of health dip below 70% during the battery warranty coverage.
All of these aimed to provide MG customers peace-of-mind.
The product mix in Malaysia will include models with internal combustion engines (ICE) in the second half of 2024.
SAIC Motor Malaysia said it expects sales to be roughly 50:50 between ICE cars and EVs though EVs may surge ahead subject to consumer demand.
It also said it would need to have local assembly to compete effectively and is currently in talks with potential local partners.
For customers who buy the MG vehicles before April 30 will get the following free items:
> Free 7kW Wallbox Charger with installation, for MG ZS EV and MG4 Standard models (worth RM 4,600)
> Free 11kW Wallbox Charger with installation, for MG4 Lux model (worth RM 5,200)
> Free 1,000 Charging Credits with DC Handal and JomCharge, for MG4 Lux Extended Range and XPOWER models
To ensure peace of mind, SAIC Motor Malaysia has introduced the MG Insurance Program (MIP). Partnering with established insurers Berjaya Sompo Insurance, Allianz Malaysia and Generali Malaysia, MG owners will receive additional EV protection.
They will get unlimited towing cost coverage: the EV will be towed to the nearest charging point operator should it run out of battery during a journey
The home wallbox charger would also be insured up to RM10,000 should it be stolen or damaged by external factors.
Additionally with Allianz Malaysia under the Allianz EV Shield program, should the EV catch fire as a result of a faulty charger, a charging cable or from the use of a public charging station, customers will be compensated with up to RM5,000 on top of the usual vehicle insurance coverage.
"We believe both the MG4 and MG ZS EV will be an enticing proposition for Malaysians seeking affordable EV without compromise," said SAIC Motor Malaysia Sdn Bhd managing director Steven Du.
In terms of dealer network, SAIC aims to appoint 25 dealerships by Q3 this year.
MG's entry is sure to put the heat on other Chinese EV players such as Great Wall, Chery and BYD.
The keen competition among the EV makers could lead to price cuts and other forms of promotions in a parallel echo of a major price war that is now taking place in China, which was triggered by Tesla.
The all-new MG4 and MG ZS EV are available for the public to check out at MG Motor dealer showrooms nationwide from today.
