KUALA LUMPUR: The all electric Mercedes-EQS is launched today, priced from RM698,888.
Six EQS customers were present to take delivery of their cars.
The EQC and EQB were also previewed at the event, which is being held in conjunction with the July 22-24 Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek.
The EQC will launch locally in September, while the EQB will follow in October. Tentative prices are RM390,000 and RM330,000 respectively.
Members of the media were given a chance to drive the EQS around in the city following its launch.
With the announcement of three new models added to the Mercedes-EQ sub-brand, the company is underscoring an electric future in Malaysia, in line with its global direction to go all-electric by the end of the decade, where market conditions allow.
“Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) maintains its momentum towards a sustainable future with the launch of the new additions to the Mercedes-EQ family," said Mercedes-Benz Malaysia president and CEO Sagree Sardien.
"Our electric initiative is in full swing. We are committed to 'Lead in Electric' with a holistic well-rounded approach towards a sustainable tomorrow in Malaysia.”
The EQ series sets itself apart from Mercedes-benz combustion engine cars with its "Sensual Purity" design that is reflected in generously modelled surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions.
The fully imported EQS is the first all-electric luxury sedan from Mercedes-EQ to be based on the modular architecture for the luxury electric vehicle segment, fusing luxury, technology, design, functionality and connectivity.
Available as a sole variant, the rear-wheel drive EQS 450+ is rated at 245 kW (WLTP combined electrical consumption: 19.8 – 15.7 kWh/100km; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) with a WLTP range of up to 782km.
The EQS features a host of other luxurious features including the highly-anticipated MBUX Hyperscreen, rear axle steering and Burmester 3D Surround Sound System.
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia said it had successfully driven the EQS from its headquarters in Puchong, Selangor to Johor Baru and back on a single charge, and had battery juice left to spare - all the while keeping to the speed limit.
The sporty, low and slim front of the EQS forms a coupé-like silhouette with a bow (one bow) stretched tightly over the greenhouse.
The A-pillar, which has been moved far forward, and the C-pillar at the rear generate space for a generous passenger compartment.
Unique in this segment is the cab-forward design: the overhangs and the front-end assembly are short, the rear is smoothly rounded.
Aerodynamicists worked with the designers to achieve a new Cd benchmark of 0.20, making the EQS the most aerodynamic production car in the world. This translates to longer operating range.
It is also among the best in terms of quiet running.
The very low wind noise level contributes significantly to this.
The all new EQS 450+ comes equipped with the AMG line exterior and body styling and features a 21-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels.
The radiator grille marks a bold claim with the Mercedes-Benz pattern along with the panoramic sunroof making this luxury electric sedan stand out from the rest.
The EQS 450+ is furnished with the DIGITAL LIGHT package featuring the Digital Lighting itself, continuous reflector strips on the front, and Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus.
For ultimate comfort and tranquility Electric Art interior allows you to experience "progressive luxury" with all the senses.
This includes ambient lighting as a standard, allowing drivers to showcase the interior according to their personal preferences or current mood.
The 64 colours of the ambient lighting create exciting colour schemes, and paired with the Active Ambient lighting allows passengers to experience a technological leap visually as it links aesthetics with innovative driver information and extended functions.
Wraparound light strips and trim elements amalgamate to form an additional lighting level. This also supports driving assistance systems visually.
With Comfort Seats, the EQS 450+ adds velour floor mats and a roof liner in black fabric and blending comfort with technology, the Multifunction steering wheel wrapped in nappa leather with galvanised steering-wheel gearshift paddles in silver chrome.
The electric luxury sedan is finessed in an Anthracite line structure lime wood trim, and an anthracite open-pored line structure line wood centre console.
The EQS 450+ will feature upholstery in Nappa leather black along with power front seats with memory function.
The KEYLESS-GO Comfort Package will also be included featuring the HANDS-FREE ACCESS. The luxury electric sedan will also include a rear MBUX tablet and a wireless charging system for mobile devices in the rear.
THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control, EASY-PACK tailgate and load compartment cover will be included.
Adding on to the comfort is the Acoustic Comfort package and the adaptive rear compartment lighting with the interior Light package.
Pull-out sun visors and an illuminated door sill panels with the Mercedes-Benz lettering adds to the elegance of the vehicle featuring heat-insulating, noise-insulating and infrared-reflecting laminated glass.
For further convenience the EQS 450+ will include the USB Package Plus, a wireless charging system for mobile devices and a stowage compartment beneath the centre console.
The EQS marks the launch of a new generation of batteries with significantly higher energy density.
It has a usable energy content of around 107.8 kWh. The battery management software, developed in-house, allows updates over the air (OTA).
In this way, the energy management system remains up to date throughout the life cycle. In terms of the cell chemistry, the cobalt content of the cathodes has been reduced to ten percent.
With ranges up to 782 kilometres (WLTP), the drive of the EQS also meets every expectation of a progressive saloon in the S-Class segment.
Intelligent recuperation is situation-optimised with the aid of ECO Assist and acts with foresight, taking into account traffic conditions or topography, among other things.
The driver can additionally set three recuperation levels and the gliding function via shift paddles on the steering wheel.
The EQS 450+ allows the alternating current charging system supporting up to 11 kW and direct current charging system supporting up to 200kW.
As standard, a 5-metre charging cable will be given for wall box or public charging stations.
The EQS 450+ for the first-time, features rear-axle steering for manoeuvring made easier, the AIRMATIC package, and adding to the technological advancements, suspensions with adaptive damping system.
The luxury electric sedan will also include DYNAMIC SELECT and the Pedestrian protection bringing the car to a halt when sensors pick up pedestrian movement in its path.
Safety does not only include the car and driver but also the safety of pedestrians.
Since there is no engine sound to alert a pedestrian of your presence, the car is fitted with an Acoustic presence indicator so that the electric vehicle does not pose a danger to pedestrians and cyclists when driven virtually silently.
The acoustic presence indicator generates specific Mercedes-Benz sounds outside of the vehicle up to a speed of around 30kph.
As part of this, it differentiates between driving forwards and reversing. The EQS has up to 350 sensors, depending on the equipment. These record distances, speeds and accelerations, lighting conditions, precipitation and temperatures, seat occupancy as well as the driver' eye blink rate or the passengers' speech.
This wealth of information is processed by control units that, controlled by algorithms, make decisions at lightning speed.
The new EQS can expand its capabilities based on new experiences, because it is highly capable of learning thanks to artificial intelligence (AI). The EQS 450+ comes with the Driving Assistance Plus Package including Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Steering Assist, Evasive manoeuvre support, PRE-SAFE impulse side and Rear sensors for the lane departure assistant.
For even greater assistance, the EQS 450+ will have the URBAN GUARD vehicle protection featuring an Anti-theft alarm system, and an Interior monitoring system accessible through the Mercedes me app.
The Parking Package includes a 360-degree camera ad brings with it the Active Parking Assist with the vehicle also including the Mirror package for the Interior mirror and driver's exterior mirror to automatically dim, Electrically folding exterior mirrors and of course Ambient lighting with projection of the Mercedes-Benz brand logo.
The EQS 450+ will have the standard Tyre pressure monitoring system, TIREFIT along with window airbags and driver knee airbag.
The vehicle also includes the PRE-SAFE system, beltbag and the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system.
Extensive personalisation and exceptionally intelligent Our biggest advancement in visual technology is exemplified here with the debut of the MBUX Hyperscreen.
Featuring a fingerprint scanner, the MBUX multimedia system and an OLED front passenger display, the MBUX Hyperscreen is one of the main highlights in the EQS 450+.
The MBUX Hyperscreen is surrounded by a continuous plastic front frame. Its visible part is painted in an elaborate three-layer process in "Silver Shadow".
This coating system achieves a particularly high-quality surface impression due to extremely thin intermediate layers.
The integrated ambient lighting installed in the lower part of the MBUX Hyperscreen makes the display unit appear to float on the instrument panel.
The passenger also has its own display and operating area, which makes travel more pleasant and entertaining.
With up to seven profiles, it is possible to customise the content. However, the entertainment functions of the passenger display are only available during the journey within the framework of the country-specific legal regulations.
If the passenger seat is not occupied, the screen becomes a digital decorative part. In this case, animated stars, i.e. the Mercedes-Benz Pattern, are displayed.
For a particularly brilliant image, OLED technology is used in central and passenger displays.
This is where the individual image points are self-luminous; non-controlled image pixels remain switched off, which means that they appear deep black. The active OLED pixels, on the other hand, radiate with high color brilliance, resulting in high contrast, regardless of the angle of view and the lighting conditions.
As part of its "Ambition 2039" initiative, Mercedes-Benz is working on offering a carbon-neutral new car fleet within 20 years from now.
The company aims to go all electric by the end of the decade where market conditions allow.
In many areas, Mercedes is already thinking about tomorrow today: the new EQS is designed to be correspondingly sustainable.
The vehicles are produced in a carbon-neutral manner, and resource-saving materials such as carpets made from recycled yarn are used.
For the time being, MBM said the EQS would continue to be fully imported but left the door open for local assembly when conditions are right.
