Mazda MX-5 Miata stays true: NA engine, manual gearbox, light weight for 2027

HIROSHIMA: Mazda has confirmed that the next MX-5 Miata will retain its core traits: a naturally aspirated engine, a manual transmission, and a compact size.

Road & Track reported that the new model would feature a 2.5-litre inline-four from Mazda’s SkyActiv-Z family, replacing the current 2.0-litre, to meet stricter emissions standards while maintaining responsiveness.

Mazda has also ruled out turbocharging, emphasising the importance of a "pure driving experience".

The car would stay compact and light at under 1,000kg. It would measure less than four metres in length, ensuring agility.

A mild hybrid Miata is being considered, said Mazda, adding that the focus remains on keeping the sports car light and fun, with any electrification designed to support, not replace, its traditional dynamics.

Stylistically, the next Miata will adopt sharper, more angular lines, especially in the front.

The model is expected to be released between 2026 and 2027.
