Malaysia to ban NGV use from July 2025
By THE STAR | 04 November 2024KUALA LUMPUR: All natural gas vehicles (NGVs) will no longer be allowed to be registered or used on Malaysian roads from July 1, 2025, said Anthony Loke.
The Transport Minister said this decision was made by the Cabinet on Oct 2 due to safety concerns regarding NGVs and other road users.
He added that Petronas will also phase out the sale of NGV fuel, with the process starting immediately and completing by July 1, 2025.
In light of this policy decision, Loke said eligible NGV vehicle owners will receive assistance to transition to petrol vehicles.
Loke said that this will be in the form of a RM3,000 voucher for eligible NGV owners, to be paid out within 30 days.
He added that applications for the RM3,000 aid for NGV taxis and fully-NGV fuelled vehicles will both close on Dec 31 of this year.
However, the aid application for owners of vehicles powered by both petrol and NGVs will close on April 30, 2025 as all such vehicles will need to be petrol-driven by July 1 of the same year.
There are currently 9,509 NGV taxis, 32,137 private registered NGVs, 2,150 natural-gas fuelled buses and lorries and 587 NGV used as machinery works.
