KUALA LUMPUR: BMW Motorrad Malaysia has announced that it has begun taking orders for its big-boxer R 18 First Edition that been limited to just 18 units for Malaysia.
"The All-New BMW R 18, nothing would roar louder than its 1,802 cc two-cylinder boxer engine – which is the highest displacement boxer than BMW has ever built - sitting at the core of this cruiser. A much-anticipated engineering marvel in the premium motorcycle industry," said BMW Motorrad Malaysia head Owen Riley.
The R 18 First Edition will be priced at RM156,500 and will arrive in October and reservations are currently being entertained since there will only be 18 units headed for Malaysia.
This cruiser is covered by a three-year warranty that's accompanied by a three-year roadside assistance programme is available from RM2,525 per month based on a Financing Plan of 80% loan over a five-year tenure from BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia.
Power comes from a beefy 1.8-litre boxer-twin engine that bears the First Edition logo together with a pinstripe design that's set against a gloss black paint.
Chrome has been used on the handlebars, shifter lever, handle end caps, cylinder head covers and crank covers as well as the air intake.
At the front, the headlight illuminates the way forward with LEDs which is also used for the rear brake and indicator lights.
BMW Motorrad says that the engine housing cover is made out of milled aluminium which was created in collaboration with Roland Sands Design and features a contrast between black and silver.
The 1.8-litre (1,802cc) motor is touted to be BMW's biggest displacement boxer engine it has ever built.
The air/oil-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke boxer engine with two chain-driven camshafts is placed above the driveshaft and is capable of producing 91hp at 4,750rpm and 158Nm at 3,000rpm with Vmax restrained to 180kph.
The engine has been equipped with an electronic intake pipe fuel injection with twin-spark ignition and alternator as well as a 600W permanent magnet generator paired with a
maintenance-free 12V / 26Ah battery.
Power is transmitted to the new cruiser via a single-disk dry clutch with a six-gear shifting claw transmission in a separate transmission housing.
The secondary open, nickel-plated driveshaft, meanwhile, puts focus on the torque.
Suspending this cruiser's double-cradle steel frame with screwed-on under beams is a classic telescopic fork with fork sleeves and cantilever suspension strut with travel-dependent damping.
The rear, however, uses a steel swinging fork with a central shock strut.
For braking, the R 18 uses a 300mm twin disk brake with a four-piston fixed calliper at the front as standard that works together with a single disk brake in the rear.
safety comes from its Integral Anti-Lock Braking System (partially integral), Automatic Stability Control
(ASC) and comes with three riding modes of Rock, Roll and Rain.
The R 18 is also fitted with a specifically designed circular instrument with a multifunctional display that features a classic-style analogue speedometer display.
For convenience, there's also a keyless-ride system, a reverse gear and a lockable fuel filter cap.
There's also personalisation options that include a variety of wheel seats, handlebars, valve covers, engine breastplate, luggage range as well as the engine protection bar to name a few.
"The all-new BMW R 18 is in a league of its own. The new large capacity boxer cruiser combines many iconic hallmarks in the history of BMW Motorrad and modernises the ride with its uniquely bold character,” said BMW Group Malaysia managing director Harald Hoelzl.
