LHD Proton Saga to be assembled in Egypt in Dec 2024
By THE STAR | 12 November 2024CAIRO: Proton will begin local assembly of the Proton Saga model in Egypt starting this December, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said that this initiative was part of Malaysia's efforts to foster a new approach to cooperation between countries.
"Proton is not just an automotive company; it is a source of pride and part of Malaysia's identity," he said during the launching ceremony of the CKD Proton assembly plant in Egypt today. He emphasised that such joint ventures are crucial for advancing local industries.
"Malaysia's presence in Egypt is built on trust and friendship," he added. The production plan for this assembly plant aims to produce 16,000 units from this year until 2026, with an estimated value of RM570mil.
Proton chairman Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar said that for the local car brand to continue progressing, it is essential for Proton to explore new markets. "Our export sales are increasing every year. In our medium-term planning, we intend to make Egypt the main hub for Proton in the region," hesaid at the event.
He also said the regional assembly centre in Giza, Egypt, would be the company's first foreign location for its left-hand drive (LHD) models.
"We hope this platform will provide the potential for Proton to expand further into neighbouring countries, making Egypt the main hub," he stated.
The Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and the Egyptian Minister of Transport and Industry, Kamel Al-Wazir, and Hisham Ezz Elarab, chairman of Ezz Elarab Elsewedy Industrial Investments, were also present at the event.
