Lamborghini Temerario unveiled: A 907hp hybrid Huracan replacement
By CARSIFU | 18 August 2024MONTEREY: Lamborghini has introduced the Temerario, a new benchmark in the super sports car segment, featuring a 920 CV twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain.
This latest model is the Huracan successor and forms part of Lamborghini’s High-Performance Electrified Vehicle (HPEV) range.
The plug-in hybrid was showcased at Monterey Car Week 2024 (Aug 9-18) in California and represents a significant advancement in both performance and hybrid technology.
The Temerario’s powertrain combines a newly developed 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine and three electric motors, resulting in a total power output of 920 CV/907hp.
This engine is notable for its ability to reach 10,000 rpm, making it the first production super sports car engine to achieve such a high rev count. The car's performance figures are equally impressive, with a top speed exceeding 340kph and acceleration from 0 to 100kph in just 2.7 seconds.
Front-wheel drive in EV mode
One of the most significant technical features of the Temerario is its ability to operate as a front-wheel-drive vehicle in electric-only mode. The electric front axle, which is powered by two oil-cooled axial flow electric motors, provides a combined peak output of 220 kW /295hp.
This setup not only enables the car to be driven purely on electric power but also contributes to its agility and stability, particularly in narrow or high-speed cornering situations.
Hybrid powertrain and transmission
The twin-turbo V8 engine, referred to internally as the L411, delivers 800 CV/789hp at high revs, with torque peaking at 730Nm between 4,000 and 7,000 rpm.
The hybrid system is designed to fill in any gaps in power delivery, ensuring immediate acceleration and seamless transitions between gears. The system includes a lithium-ion battery pack located in the central tunnel, providing a modest 3.8 kWh and enabling the car to operate in fully electric mode when needed. The range wasn't specified though it won't be long.
The Temerario's powertrain is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), which is installed transversally behind the V8 engine.
This configuration allows for a more compact layout and optimised weight distribution, enhancing the vehicle’s handling characteristics.
The DCT’s design is unique, featuring a hollow shaft that shares synchronisers for different gear paths, reducing the transmission’s weight and increasing shift speed.
Design and Aerodynamics
Lamborghini’s design philosophy for the Temerario blends futuristic elements with traditional Lamborghini DNA.
The car features sharp lines, a bold shark nose, and a new hexagonal light signature. The exterior design not only emphasises the car’s athleticism but also enhances its aerodynamic efficiency, with a focus on stability at high speeds and cooling performance.
The Temerario’s underbody is equipped with vortex generators and an advanced diffuser that significantly increases rear downforce.
The aerodynamic performance is further improved with optional packages, such as the ‘Alleggerita’ package, which reduces weight by over 25 kg and increases aerodynamic load by 67%.
Interior and technology
Inside, the Temerario embodies Lamborghini’s "Feel like a pilot" philosophy, with a low seating position, a slim dashboard, and a steering wheel designed for a racing-inspired experience.
The interior is a blend of digital and physical controls, with high-quality materials such as carbon fibre, leather, and suede. The car also offers a range of customisation options, including various seat designs and carbon fiber interior elements.
The Temerario introduces the Lamborghini Vision Unit (LAVU) system, which includes three cameras that enable advanced features like Lamborghini Telemetry 2.0, Memories Recorder, and Dashcam. These features are designed to enhance both the driving experience and safety, allowing drivers to record and analyze their track performance, capture driving moments, and ensure continuous surveillance.
Driving modes and connectivity
The Temerario offers a versatile driving experience with 13 different modes, including Città (urban), Strada (country roads), Sport, and Corsa (track).
These modes are designed to optimise the car’s performance for various driving conditions, from everyday use to high-performance track driving.
The car also features new hybrid-specific modes: Recharge, Hybrid, and Performance, which can be selected via controls on the steering wheel.
In terms of connectivity, the Temerario is the most advanced Lamborghini to date.
It features a three-display Human Machine Interface (HMI) system that provides a fully integrated multimedia experience, including real-time navigation updates, smartphone connectivity, and customizable displays.
The system also allows users to interact with the car’s features through the Lamborghini Unica app, which offers remote access to vehicle data and controls.
By combining a high-revving twin-turbo V8 with electric motors and front-wheel drive capability in EV mode, Lamborghini said it has created a vehicle that offers unparalleled performance, versatility, and driving pleasure.
Lamborghini chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann said the arrival of the Temerario means Lamborghini has become the first luxury automotive brand to offer a completely hybridised range.
