Kia shows off versatile PV5 electric van

SEOUL: You are looking at the Kia PV5 van that can be configured for use as a passenger car or for hauling cargo for a business.

It was unveiled just ahead of Kia EV Day in Tarragona, Spain, on Feb 24.

This reveal gives us a first look at Kia's vision for the future of electric vehicles, all under their new Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy. Think of it as Kia's way of shaking things up and redefining what mobility means.

The PV5, first seen as a cool concept at CES 2024, is designed to be flexible and customisable.

Kia wants to cater to all sorts of drivers, whether you're hauling cargo or cruising with passengers. It's planning multiple versions, including the Passenger and Cargo models we're seeing now, plus even more specialised options coming later.

What sets the PV5 apart is its fresh, modern design that breaks away from the typical commercial vehicle look.

Kia design chief Karim Habib said the PV5 models share a common thread: they're all inspired by Kia's "Opposites United" design philosophy. According to Habib, each model was created to radiate confidence, strength and a futuristic vibe.

The PV5 Passenger model is all about sleek lines and great visibility, thanks to those big windows and a low profile. The black accents add a touch of drama, while sturdy wheel arches give it a connection to Kia's popular SUVs. And that rear tailgate? Stylish and functional.

The PV5 Cargo model goes for a boxier shape to maximise space, which is suited for hauling goods. The twin side-opening doors make loading and unloading a breeze. It's got the same modern design as the Passenger version, but with even more practicality in mind.

Kia's EV Day promises even more exciting reveals, including additional PV5 configurations and a deeper dive into their PBV strategy. Kia showed off the EV4 three days earlier.

Stay tuned on Feb 27 when Kia will spill the beans on the interiors and all the spec details.
