Jaguar previews ultra-luxury electric sedan amid brand transformation

LONDON: Jaguar has released some teaser photos of its all-new electric car that is going to get even more expensive as the brand strives to move up the value chain.

The upcoming electric four-door grand tourer is part of its ambitious overhaul, moving upmarket to position itself among the luxury elite. After producing internal combustion vehicles for over 75 years, Jaguar is pivoting to become an all-electric luxury brand by 2025.

Dubbed internally as a "new species," this flagship electric GT prototype was recently spotted undergoing testing on British roads.

Although Jaguar has not officially confirmed the model's name, a US trademark filing hints it may be branded as the "I-Type." This would be in line with the company's existing nomenclature, following the now-discontinued I-Pace SUV. However, Jaguar maintains that the final name remains undisclosed.

The upcoming EV is set to rival ultra-luxury models like the Cadillac Celestiq and Rolls-Royce Spectre, marking Jaguar’s entry into a higher echelon of the automotive market.

The new model is expected to start at over US$130,000 (RM582,000) and could exceed US$200,000 (RM895,000) for top configurations.

Equipped with Jaguar's latest JAE (Jaguar Electric Architecture) platform, it promises a range of up to 700km and a projected output of over 575hp. Dual motors and all-wheel drive are anticipated, though exact specifications are still under wraps.

The prototype features a bold, low-riding silhouette, departing from Jaguar’s previous SUVs and sedans. Key design elements include an extended bonnet, aggressive bumpers, and a high beltline, hinting at Jaguar’s new design language, which is set for a full reveal at Miami Art Week on Dec 2.

According to Jaguar’s managing director Rawdon Glover, the design would be a radical departure, aiming for "substantial road presence" and uniqueness.

The electric GT will be produced in Solihull, UK, with deliveries slated to begin in 2026.

This move comes as Jaguar phases out its current models like the F-Type and F-Pace to focus on a fully electric lineup, cementing its future as a high-end luxury EV brand.
