Hyundai Motor reveals Initium hydrogen FCEV concept previewing new design language

SEOUL: Hyundai Motor introduced on Thursday its Initium hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) concept at the “Clearly Committed” event in Goyang, South Korea, showcasing Hyundai’s 27 years of hydrogen development and its commitment to a sustainable, hydrogen-powered future.

“Initium,” meaning “beginning” in Latin, symbolises Hyundai’s pioneering role in hydrogen technology.

The Initium concept SUV previews Hyundai’s first production FCEV set for release in early 2025, featuring a new “Art of Steel” design language that reflects Hyundai’s HTWO hydrogen brand.

The exterior blends solid volumes and urban ruggedness, highlighted by aerodynamic wheels and a robust roof rack.

The SUV’s interior prioritises space and comfort with a wide cabin and reclining seats, while an advanced hydrogen fuel cell system targets a range exceeding 650km.

Its power output reaches 150kW/201hp, offering strong acceleration and efficiency, aided by large hydrogen fuel tanks and low rolling resistance tyres.

A FCEV-specific route planner simplifies locating hydrogen stations, providing real-time information on station status. Additional V2L functionality allows Initium to power external appliances, turning the vehicle into a mobile energy source.

Initium will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou in November.
