ROME: The new Mercedes-Benz CLA has been introduced as the first model in a completely new family of vehicles, offering significant improvements over its predecessor in space, refinement, comfort, intelligence, and efficiency.
The model is available with both all-electric and hybrid drive options, with the initial launch focused on the all-electric variant. It made its world premiere here last night and is expected to sell for €50,000 (RM241,000).
The vehicle is equipped with the newly developed Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which marks a turning point in the company’s technology strategy.

This system transforms the CLA into the most intelligent model produced by the manufacturer by integrating a supercomputer connected to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud.
The connection allows the vehicle to receive regular over-the-air updates for key functions, including driving assistance systems, ensuring that it remains current with technological advancements over its lifespan.
MB.OS heralds the fourth generation of the MBUX system. This update brings together artificial intelligence components from both Microsoft and Google, delivering a more personal and intuitive digital experience.

The new interface features the MBUX Superscreen, a high-resolution display that allows users to organise apps much like a smartphone, with the ability to move, group, and rename them as desired. The system retains the familiar Mercedes-Benz interface while offering enhanced flexibility through seamless integration of third-party content.
A notable innovation is the upgraded MBUX Virtual Assistant, which utilises generative AI to support complex, multi-turn dialogues with the driver.
By drawing on information from both Microsoft Bing and Google Maps, the assistant provides detailed navigation responses and real-time traffic information.

The navigation system itself, based on Google Maps and incorporating the new Automotive AI Agent, offers route planning that includes charging stops, and displays a three-dimensional representation of the vehicle’s surroundings to aid situational awareness.
Safety and assistance features are also enhanced with the inclusion of the MB.DRIVE system.
Standard across the European models are extensive safety features, including DISTRONIC Distance Assist. An optional MB.DRIVE ASSIST package is set to be available at launch in Europe and includes Steering Assist and Lane Change Assist, which together form a state-of-the-art SAE Level 2 driving assistance system designed to help prevent accidents.

The all-electric CLA versions demonstrate a 40 per cent reduction in carbon footprint over the non-electrified predecessor.
Two variants of the Tesla Model 3 rival have been announced: the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology and the CLA 350 4Matic with EQ Technology. Both report zero CO2 emissions, with the WLTP range reaching up to 792km in the case of the CLA 250+.
The CLA 350 with 260 kW is positioned as the performance version.

The vehicle’s 800-volt electrical architecture allows for fast charging, enabling a recharge of up to 325km of range within 10 minutes via fast DC charging at up to 320kW.
A new battery generation, featuring an 85 kWh lithium-ion cell with increased gravimetric and volumetric energy density, further supports the CLA’s efficiency credentials.
This battery uses a blend of silicon oxide and graphite anodes, reducing cobalt content and lowering the carbon footprint of production by about 30 per cent.
In addition, the vehicle employs a two-speed transmission. The first gear ensures strong acceleration and high towing capacity, while the second gear optimises performance and efficiency at higher speeds.

A multi-source heat pump, using waste heat from the drivetrain, battery and ambient air, is standard, reducing the electrical energy required for cabin pre-conditioning.
A hybrid variant using 48-volt technology is also planned for later in the year. This model integrates an electric motor within the transmission and offers the possibility of electric cruising at speeds up to 100kph, with recuperation capabilities across all gears to recover energy.
Externally, the design includes a reinterpreted grille featuring an illuminated Mercedes-Benz star panel with 142 animated LED elements.

Lighting is enhanced by star-shaped daytime running lights and taillights, with optional Multibeam LED headlights adding to the vehicle’s distinctive appearance.
A fixed panoramic roof without a central brace is standard, providing an unobstructed view and improved headroom, while the interior adopts a minimalist approach with a focus on high-tech features and modern materials.
