Toyota GR and GR Sport models arrive
By CARSIFU | 17 February 2023SEPANG: Themed ‘Awaken the Beasts’, UMW Toyota Motor and Gazoo Racing Malaysia, for the first time, launched five new Gazoo Racing models comprising three GR and two GR Sport variants.
The five are the new GR Supra that comes with on-the-road without road tax and insurance price of RM645,000, GR Corolla (RM355,000), GR86 (RM295,000), Hilux GR Sport (RM159,880) and Corolla Cross GR Sport (RM142,000).
UMW Toyota Motor deputy chairman Takashi Obata said the special GR and GR Sport models are a manifestation of Toyota’s aspiration to build ever better cars that are designed and engineered with DNA derived from the company's experiences and achievements in global motorsports.
“These models are built to perform and to excite,” he said.
UMW Toyota Motor president Datuk Ravindran K said the company was proud to continue expanding the GR presence in Malaysia.
“This will not only be in terms of vehicle offerings but also a comprehensive range of aftermarket performance parts and services available via the exclusive GR Garages and GR Outlets nationwide,” he said.
Gazoo Racing’s product offering in Malaysia began with the introduction of the GR Supra in 2019, followed up by the global release of the highly-anticipated GR Yaris in 2020.
That same year, UMW Toyota Motor unveiled the Vios GR Sport in Malaysia which pays tribute to GR Vios Challenge racing cars.
GR Supra
The GR Supra is the epitome of a precise handling modern sports car with its optimum weight distribution and a highly rigid frame.
Initially offered with an eight-speed automatic in 2019, the new GR Supra is now also available with a six-speed manual transmission.
Performance continues to be backed by a twin-scroll turbo-charged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine delivering 388PS and 500Nm of torque for a 0-100kph sprint of 4.4 seconds.
The GR Supra, which is fitted with redesigned 19-inch alloy wheels, also offers two driving modes - Sports and Normal - which alter the settings of the engine, transmission and suspension damping.
Like its predecessor, the GR Supra is fully-trimmed with top-of-the-range safety equipment in the form of the Toyota Supra Safety suite of Advance Driver Assistance System, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert; Rear-end Collision Alert; Intelligent parking sensors with Automatic braking; and Toyota Premium Security & Solar Film.
The GR Supra also comes with an 8.8-inch multimedia display, a Head-Up Display, an 8-inch Colour TFT speedometer and a 12-speaker JBL Premium Sound System.
GR Corolla
The GR Corolla is powered by a 1.6-litre 3-cylinder turbo engine producing a whopping 300PS and 370Nm of torque.
It also comes with a six-speed short-shift intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) with auto rev match and is equipped with the GR-FOUR AWD system capable of splitting front and rear torque distribution to 60:40, 50:50, and 30:70 similar to that used by the GR Yaris.
Weighing 1,475kg, the GR Corolla is fitted with front MacPherson struts and rear double wishbone with retuned springs, dampers and anti-roll bars to increase handling performance.
Other items are a forged carbon fibre roof, sporty rear spoiler, vented hood, and 18-inch alloy wheels with Yokohama Advan tyres.
Available in Precious Metal, Super White 2, Emotional Red 2 & Black, the GR Corolla comes with 12.3-inch full digital instrument display, 9-inch display audio with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and six speakers as standard.
Apart from seven airbags, the car is also fully equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 which is the most refined version of Toyota Safety Sense that has features such as Pre-Collision Warning, Lane Departure Alert, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control & Auto High Beam.
GR86
The GR86 builds on the success of the 86 with extensive improvements brought upon by a newly-developed 2.4-litre four-cylinder boxer engine that uses the D-4S direct and port injection.
With the engine delivering 237PS and 250Nm of torque, the GR86 can complete the 0-100kph sprint in 6.3 seconds.
This 2+2 coupe is available with six-speed close-ratio manual transmission with a short-throw shifter or as a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters.
Weighing 1,291kg for the manual variant, GR86 has the ideal front engine and rear-wheel drive configuration to deliver a 50:50 weight distribution.
Its limited slip differential enables enthusiasts to fully put the car's power down easily.
The GR86 is also equipped with a range of equipment such as a Pre-Crash System; Adaptive Cruise Control; Lane Departure Alert; Blind Spot Monitoring; Automatic High Beams; Adaptive Front Lighting System; and seven airbags.
The interior has been redesigned and comes with combination leather and suede seats, an 8-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six speakers, a 7-inch digital meter, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
Hilux GR Sport
Based on the Hilux Double Cab 2.8 Rogue specification, the Hilux GR Sport features new sports suspension system with monotube dampers tuned to inspire greater driving confidence across all terrains.
Also fitted are paddle shifters, a first in the Hilux line-up, for a sportier drive and quicker gear shifting.
Other GR Sport embellishments are the new front bumper and blacked out side mirrors; grille frame and overfenders finished in body colour for a sportier aesthetic; black sports bar; a new shark fin antenna; and the black and red body side and tailgate graphics which pays homage to Toyota Gazoo Racing’s rally cars.
The Hilux GR Sport is also fitted with red brake callipers with the GR logo and newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels.
The interior is detailed with red stitching while the redesigned front sports seats get suede and leather inserts.
Other sporty upgrades are the GR-badged leather steering wheel with red stitching, the GR theme Optitron meter with GR welcome animation, GR push start button, and aluminium sports pedals.
Corolla Cross GR Sport
Catering to SUV customers wanting an enhanced sporty driving feel and better handling, the Corolla Cross GR Sport gets specially-tuned stiffer front and rear suspension with a special performance bar added under the chassis.
The exterior features a two-tone colour package - black exterior on the outer mirror, roof and rear spoiler for a more sporty appeal while a more aggressively-styled front radiator grille has a black design for wider impression.
Other exterior upgrades are 18-inch inch GR Sport-designed alloy wheels; clear lens LED rear lamps and an exclusive rear bumper lower garnish design.
Inside, there is the push start button with GR logo; a leather-wrapped with red stitching steering wheel featuring tilt and telescopic adjustments; leather with red stitching lever knob and boot; leather with red stitching seat covers with embossed GR logos on the front headrest; and a GR carpet mat design.
Its 1.8-litre engine delivers 139PS and 172Nm of torque and is mated to a seven-speed continuously variable transmission with Sequential Shiftmatic.
It also gets an electric power steering with Sport ECU for improved steering feel and response.
Among other items are the Pre Crash System; Automatic High Beam; Dynamic Radar Cruise Control; Lane Departure Alert; Lane Tracing Assist; 3D Panoramic View Monitor; Blind Spot Monitor; Rear Cross Traffic Alert; Tyre Pressure Warning System; Driver Start Control; Vehicle Telematics System; front and rear Driving Video Recorder; and seven SRS airbags (Best In Class).
All GR and GR Sport models are built to the same high standards as every Toyota vehicle and come with a 5-year/unlimited mileage (150,000km for the Hilux GR Sport) factory warranty.
