Going digital: Private vehicles no longer need to display 'road tax' stickers after registering

PETALING JAYA: Private vehicle owners do not need to deal with messy road tax stickers from today once they have gotten their digital version of the road tax, says Anthony Loke Siew Fook.

The Transport Minister further said that the digital display of motor vehicle road tax stickers (LKM) and Malaysian driving licences (LMM) would be the solution to he constant complaints of vehicle owners and drivers.

In a statement issued today, Loke said that an in-house pilot project is now under way to begin the use of the digital display mode of the e-LKM and e-LMM.

Loke's announcement has met with mixed reactions from the public. A few hours later, he followed up with a Facebook post to answer some questions posed by the public.

The e-LKM is the e-version of the road tax sticker for privately owned vehicles, whereas the e-LMM is the e-version of the Malaysian driving licence.

Both e-LKM and e-LMM can be applied through the Road Transport Department (JPJ) website at https://public.jpj.gov.my or MyJPJ app from today.

Loke said that with a digital roadtax, vehicle owners can do away with the display of the hardcopy of the road tax stickers, as is currently required by law.

The amendment to the law to enable this will be gazetted using the powers allotted to the Transport Ministry by law.

The whole digitalisation process of both the roadtax and driving licences will, however, be implemented in phases.

Loke said that those who are not ready to go digital can still display their roadtax stickers on their vehicles during the interim period until the digitalision phases are fully completed.

"I had received various feedback on the road tax stickers. The Transport Ministry will alleviate the people’s difficulty with the road tax stickers and Malaysian driving licences through digitalisation.

"In line with this initiative, the provision under Section 20 of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), which states that all motor vehicle licences must be stuck and displayed on the vehicle will not be enforced anymore for vehicle owners under the first phase," said Loke.
