Ferrari F80 presented at Universo Ferrari, Bangkok

BANGKOK: Ferrari's F80 supercar was presented during the fourth iteration of Universo Ferrari (Ferrari Universe) here last week.

Priced at 3.6 million euros (RM17mil) before options, only 799 examples of the F80 are to be made and all have already been spoken for, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.

As a first for South-East Asia, the hybrid supercar was unveiled as a representation of the Italian luxury sports car manufacturer's ultimate expression of performance and engineering.

Despite being a two-seater, Ferrari calls the F80 a 1+ seater with the passenger seat placed slightly further back within the tightened confines of the cabin when compared to its stablemates, which include the 288 GTO, F40, F50, Enzo and La Ferrari.

Using a 3.0-litre (2,992cc) F163CF 120-degree V6 engine with two electric turbochargers to do away with any lag.

The engine is a derivative of the powerplant that powered the Maranello-based Ferrari 499P to victory at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023 and this year.

With 900PS at 8,750rpm and 850Nm of torque at 5,500rpm provided by the engine alone, the output is further supplemented by two additional electric motors for the front axle - each providing 142PS and 121Nm of torque.

The electric motors are powered by a 2.28kWh battery while an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission manages power delivery to the rear.

Ferrari calls the combined efforts of the electric motor and combustion engine its e4WD system.

Meanwhile, its total systems output now resides at 1,200PS and 1,092Nm of torque - making the F80 the most powerful road-legal car built within its stables.

This allows the F80 to sprint from 0 to 100kph in a mere 2.15 seconds.

Another 3.6 seconds later and the F80 has reached 200kph - taking a total of 5.75 seconds to complete.

At 250kph, the amount of downforce generated is 1,050kg.

Pushing onwards, the car will reach a limited top speed of 350kph.

The F80's performance has allowed it to re-set the brand's Fiorano lap time to one minute 15.3 seconds.

Although the F80 has electric motors, Ferrari has done away with the electric vehicle mode and external recharging ports.

Rather, it has only been provided with Hybrid, Performance and Qualify driving modes.

The reason?

"It is considered not to be in keeping with the car's mission," came the reply.

For road-holding duties, the F80 uses an active suspension system for its all-around double-wishbone setup including active inboard dampers.

Also fitted are upper wishbones that have been created via 3D printing - a first among Ferrari's stablemates.

In its entirety, the suspension is said to provide a compliant ride along daily routes and yet flat and scalpel-like on the track.

For stopping power, the F80 gets fitted with front 408mm and rear 380mm carbon-ceramic discs that get abused by six-piston (front) and four-piston (rear) callipers.

The disc brakes have been coated with silicone carbide for added resilience.

This results in the F80's ability to come to a complete stop from 100kph in 28 metres or 98 metres from 200kph.

In a staggered setup, the front 20-inch (285/30) and rear 21-inch (345/30) wheels can be fitted with a choice of either Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 or Pilot Sport Cup 2 R.

Following the F80's unveiling, the event also marked the opening of the fourth iteration of Universo Ferrari that's being held at EmSphere shopping mall in Bangkok.

The event began in Maranello, Italy (2022) and has travelled to Sydney, Australia (2023) as well as Seoul, Korea (2024).

The event showcases other notable Ferrari models, which include the same Formula 1 car, the F1-2000, that allowed Michael Schumacher to clinch his third Formula 1 World Championship.

The show also includes the 499P, which marked the brand's return to the prestigious 24 hours of Le Mans after a 58-year hiatus.

Other cars such as the 296 GT3 and 296 Challenge, among others, are also on display.
