PETALING JAYA: A 28-year-old man was at the gym for his routine workout but was stopped in his tracks when he got a call from his frantic wife.
Recounting the Dec 22 incident, the man, who only wanted to be known as “G,” said his wife received a notification from a parking payment app that his car had been detected using valet parking at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur at 8.15pm.
“I was at the gym when my wife called me and asked where I was. I sent her a picture of my car at the gym.
“I was surprised when she sent me a receipt for valet parking at the hotel,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Suspecting that someone had cloned his car licence plate, G immediately drove to the nearest police station here where he lodged a police report on the same day.
“I suspected that my car plate had been misused by someone I do not know.
“I want to protect myself in case anything happens, whether it would be traffic summonses or accidents,” he added.
When contacted, Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said police have encountered such cases before.
“It is a tactic used by cloned car syndicates.
“Normally, such cases will be referred to the Road Transport Department.
“Syndicates often use the identity of a legally-registered vehicle with a similar make and model.
“We urge those who encounter such incidents to lodge a police report as soon as possible.”
