China's Maxus unveils new premium electric vehicles

BERLIN: Chinese manufacturer Maxus is boosting its European range by adding a nobly-equipped electric passenger MPV and an unusual pick-up.

The offshoot of the SAIC group announced that it is bringing the luxurious Mifa 9 van and the T90 EV pick-up initially to Germany. Both are all-electric and carry premium price stickers.

The 5.27-metre-long Mifa 9 squares up against cars like the Mercedes EQV and the VW ID.Buzz at prices starting at €68,990 (RM351,000).

The sheer size of the 2.5-tonne Mifa makes it too big for a standard carport or garage on the family terraced house but for large families or hotels it could be an ideal people-mover.

Inside the Mifa has seven seats and also offers the option of massage and reclining functions in the second row perches.

Drive comes from a 180 kW/245 hp electric motor acting on the front axle, and the energy is supplied by a 90 kWh battery. Maxus claims a top speed of 200 km/h with a range of 440km between charges.

The T90 EV pick-up meanwhile has a range of 330km and currently has no rival in the European marketplace.

The electric load-hauler has come out ahead of Tesla's much-vaunted Cybertruck commercial and has been on sale in other global markets since 2021.

The truck is 5.36 metres long, with a spacious cabin for five people and a flatbed with almost 2 square metres of loading space. It can carry up to 1 metric ton of payload. A permanent-magnet synchronous motor drives the rear wheels.

Priced from €65,438 (RM333,000), the T90 EV is notably more expensive than rival diesel-powered pick-up trucks.

Maxus rates the pick-up's power output at 130 kW/177 hp, with a maximum speed of 120kph. The battery has a capacity of 89 kWh and, according to the manufacturer, the truck can cover 330km before the need to recharge.
