By JAY WONG | 06 March 2024KUALA LUMPUR: Chery Malaysia has introduced its all-electric Omoda E5 sports utility vehicle (SUV) priced at RM146,800.
The launch event here was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, China's Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing and Chery Malaysia vice-president Leo Chen, among others.
The Omoda E5 shares similar underpinnings with the conventional Omoda 5 and is aimed to be the first China-based electric vehicle (EV) to be locally assembled.
Available colours are Aqua Green, Khaki White and Phantom Grey.
A special 2.08% financing is available via a special tie-up with Maybank.
Warranty is a seven-year/150,000km for the vehicle while the battery gets an eight-year/160,000km coverage.
Additionally, Chery Malaysia will provide a one-to-one exchange for the battery should its state of health fall below 70% during its warranty period.
The drive unit, consisting of the Power Motor, Power Motor Control Unit, Power Battery Management System and Vehicle's Control Unit, gets an eight-year/160,000km warranty.
For the first 2,000 bookings, buyers will get an extensive package worth RM11,000 consisting of a complementary wall box charger, Vehicle-2-Load (V2L) cable and charging credits worth RM1,000 at EVC's 474 charging points including its roaming partners.
Using a 150kW electric motor with 340Nm of torque to drive the front wheels, the Omoda E5 can accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 7.36 seconds before reaching a top speed of 172kph.
Its 61kWh lithium iron phosphate Blade battery delivers a 430km (WLTP) range while the V2L has a capability of 3.3kW.
Energy consumption is 15.5kWh per 100km.
Three driving modes of Eco, Normal and Sport are provided.
The battery's charging system supports up to 9.9kW of alternating current (AC) and 80kW of fast direct current (DC).
The battery can be charged up from 30% to 80% in 28 minutes with 80kW DC.
Exclusively for Omoda E5 owners, charging at a Chery outlet is complementary.
Rolling on 18-inch Futuristic wheels with 215/55 series tyres, the Omoda E5 has a wheelbase of 2,640mm, and is 4,424mm long, 1,830mm wide and 1,588mm-tall.
The suspension uses front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link setup with braking power coming from front and rear disc brakes.
Illumination is taken care of by LEDs for the front automatic headlights, daytime runners and rear light clusters.
The Omoda E5 also features a welcome mode to greet its owner by unlocking itself before a little light show ensues and the external mirrors unfold.
A wake-up mode has also been included should the vehicle's Driver Monitoring System detect a fatigued driver.
Upon activation, the vehicle will turn on music, display warnings, provide voice reminders and lower the climate control's set temperature.
In Energy Saving mode, the Omoda E5 will lower its throttle response once power starts to run low.
It also has a Camping mode where the climate controls automatically adjust to a "suitable temperature" with audio and ambient lights turned on and the vehicle can be discharged externally at 220V via V2L cable.
Inside, the cabin features a multi-colour interior of Blue/Beige or Black with soft-touch material, open-pore wood grain, a multi-colour ambient lighting system and an eight-speaker Sony sound system.
The front seats are ventilated and powered for the driver (six-way) and front passenger (four-way).
Meanwhile, a 50W wireless charger with cooling function also makes its way into the cabin, along with a 540-degree panoramic camera system and voice control function.
A retractable sunroof, powered tailgate with hands-free function, automatic wipers, dual-zone climate controls with rear vents and a curved 24.6-inch screen that houses the digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system that's powered by an 8155 Qualcomm Chip rounds off the list of goodies.
For safety, the Omoda E5 comes with six airbags, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist with brake override system, electronic stability programme, traction control, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
To further bolster safety are the inclusion of lane departure warning, blind spot detection, emergency lane keeping, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, front collision warning and autonomous emergency braking.
There's also lane departure prevention, lane change assist, traffic jam assistant, integrated cruise assist, rear cross-traffic braking, rear collision warning, door open warning, multi collision braking system, intelligent evasion system and departure reminder.
"The Omoda E5 represents a significant step forward in our mission to provide sustainable mobility solutions", said Chen.
Chen further ensured the Omoda E5 would not only meet but exceed expectations and possibly set new standards for green mobility.
