Brabus tweaks Mercedes-EQS to boost range

BERLIN: Tuning electric cars is hard since the motors are so efficient in the first place but that has not stopped German experts Brabus from improving the Mercedes-EQS electric saloon.

The changes focus on improving the aerodynamics of what is already a slippery shape, with a Cd value of 0.2.

Brabus claims the improvements boost range by up to 56km in what could turn out to be a new benchmark for tuned cars instead of straight-line speed and performance.

Visual details include new carbon parts, a revised front lip and eye-catching 22-inch forged wheels.

Brabus said the rear diffuser, side skirts and lip reduce aerodynamic lift and cut drag by up to 7.2%.

The acceleration and top speed of the e-limousine, however, remains unchanged. In normal trim the EQS will top 220kph.

The price for the aerodynamic tuning is high and customers will need to ask Brabus for an individual quote. They will also need to supply a new EQS for modification.

The visual package is priced at around €21,300 (RM97,000), with at least around €6,500 (RM30,000) due extra for the flashy wheels. Straight off the showroom floor, a stock EQS costs at least €107,326 (RM488,000).

Brabus has been tuning EVs for some time but made its reputation with powerful petrol-engined Mercedes, famed for their combination of neck-snapping acceleration and discreet cosmetic alterations.

Brabus has also done work on the smart #1 all-electric car.

And in typical tuner fashion, the SUV will get more aggressive bodywork mods as well as dual motors that will reportedly spit out 422hp for a 0-100kph sprint time of 3.7s.

The smart #1 Brabus will be unveiled to the world at the Aug 26-Sept 4 Chengdu Motor Show in China.

smart was formerly owned by Mercedes-Benz but has now become a joint venture between the German automaker and China's Geely.
