BMW's regional parts depot in JB expanded as it marks 20 years
By CARSIFU | 28 November 2024JOHOR BARU: BMW Group Malaysia celebrated the 20th anniversary of its regional parts distribution centre by unveiling a significant expansion of the facility located at the Senai International Airport Free Industrial Zone here.
The centre, originally set up at Port of Tanjung Pelepas in 2004 and moved to its current site in 2016, has grown from 45,000 to 65,000 square metres, making it one of the largest BMW facilities in the Asia Pacific.
The expanded facility introduces advanced features, including a high voltage battery storage area and a modern "Very Narrow Aisle" (VNA) racking system. A two-storey design allows for future growth, and the addition of a solar panel roof supports BMW’s sustainability goals.
BMW Group Malaysia managing director Benjamin Nagel said the centre was pivotal in reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a logistics hub for the group.
Since its relocation to Senai, the centre's turnover has grown by nearly 97%, from €141 million (RM661mil) in 2017 to €277 million (RM1.3bil) in 2023.
The facility processes over 100,000 inventory lines monthly, delivering parts to more than 20 markets in the region, with a 99.5% delivery accuracy rate.
It stocks 52,000 part numbers, including 30 types of high-voltage batteries, and handles weekly shipments of 15 sea freight containers and 33,000 cubic metres of air freight. Locally, 42 trucks manage deliveries across Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand each week.
