BMW X3 rolls out in China with extended wheelbase

MUNICH: The latest iteration of the BMW X3 is set to hit Chinese showrooms in just a few days, with sales starting in February 2025.

Developed only for the Chinese market, this G48 X3 (it's G45 X3 everywhere else) targets the nation’s high-growth Sports Activity Vehicle segment and builds on the success of its predecessor, which was the top-selling BMW globally in 2023.

The new model is available with two four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines. Both are paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

The X3 xDrive 25L Luxury produces 140kW (190hp) and 310Nm of torque, accelerating from 0-100kph in 8.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of 214kph.

The more potent X3 xDrive 30L – offered in the Pioneering MSP and Exclusive MSP trims – delivers 190kW (258 hp) and 400Nm of torque, achieving 0-100kph in just 6.5 seconds and a maximum speed of 239kph.

For the first time, the model designed for China features an extended wheelbase, ensuring enhanced comfort and increased interior space.

Despite the longer wheelbase, BMW has maintained its famed 50:50 weight distribution, resulting in balanced handling and improved driving stability.

The additional 111mm of wheelbase length is particularly evident in the rear compartment, where kneeroom has increased by 96mm and legroom by over a metre.

Overall, the new BMW X3 is 126mm longer and 25mm wider than its predecessor, boasting dimensions of 4,865mm in length and 1,920mm in width, the largest in its class.

Inside, the premium experience is underpinned by an exclusive specification that includes market-specific digital services via the new BMW iDrive operating on BMW Operating System 9.

The BMW Digital Premium package has been tailored to meet the demands of Chinese customers.

Externally, both engine variants feature BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting that accentuates the signature kidney grille.

The vehicle is offered in five metallic paint finishes, including a striking Frozen variant that provides a visually impactful presence.

The X3 xDrive 25L is priced at 349,900 yuan (RM214,000/US$48,000) in China, which is US$62,250 cheaper than the G45 X3 sold in Germany.  The X3 xDrive 30L starts from 399,900 yuan (RM245,000/US$54,850). It is built at BMW’s Shenyang facility in partnership with BMW Brilliance Automotive.

The new X3 is wading into a segment with stiff competition from Chinese automakers such as Nio, Li Auto, Xpeng and Aito.
