BMW starts making 2 Series Gran Coupé at Leipzig plant

LEIPZIG: BMW has begun production of the second-generation 2 Series Gran Coupé at its Leipzig plant, marking a significant addition to the facility’s output.

The plant now produces four models, including the 1 Series, 2 Series Active Tourer, and MINI Countryman, on a single production line.

The 2 Series Gran Coupé will launch in markets globally by March 2025.

The new 2 Series Gran Coupé, introduced as a sporty and luxurious compact four-door, features an upgraded design, a fresh engine lineup, improved suspension, and standard automated driving and parking features.

It also boasts increased dimensions with 25mm in added height and 20mm in length. A new machine with laser-beam welding capabilities has been installed to streamline tailgate assembly.

With a focus on sustainability, the redesigned interior of the Gran Coupé is entirely leather-free and includes BMW's signature Curved Display.

Enhanced comfort seats further improve long-distance driving experiences. The top variant, the M235 xDrive, offers 300hp from a four-cylinder engine and delivers fuel efficiency rated at 8.2 l/100 km under WLTP standards.

The Leipzig plant, expanded since 2018, can now produce up to 350,000 cars annually, an increase of 100,000 units.

Currently, it produces up to 1,300 vehicles daily, including 500 MINIs and 800 BMWs.

The recent addition of night shifts has boosted production capacity, supporting employment growth and creating around 900 new jobs in 2024.
