BMW shows off bigger, sportier X2, first electric iX2 steps out
By CARSIFU | 11 October 2023MUNICH: BMW has unveiled the second generation X2, featuring larger dimensions and a pronounced coupé silhouette.
The model's progressive character is evident in the fully electric iX2 variant, as well as in a large spread of systems enabling automated driving and parking.
The BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9 provide innovative digital services. The worldwide market launch will begin in March 2024 with the all-electric iX2 xDrive30, X2 M35i xDrive performance model, one other petrol option, and one diesel model.
In summer 2024, a second fully electric variant and another diesel-engined example will be added to the line-up.
The new X2 and iX2 will be produced flexibly on a single assembly line at BMW's Regensburg plant. The high-voltage batteries for the fully electric model variant are also made at the Regensburg site.
The new iX2 sees the group further accelerating the ramp-up of electric mobility and underscores the progressive premium character profile of the compact SAC.
The new X2 has a distinctive, visually expressive design, with dynamically stretched lines and a generous surface treatment. Its model-specific, upright front end exudes confidence and presence, with striking LED headlights and an almost hexagonal kidney grille.
The interior features a modern premium ambience with sporting touches, including a slender instrument panel housing the Curved Display and a "floating" armrest with integral control panel.
The car offers new seats in Veganza perforated and Vernasca leather with attractive quilting, sport seats, electric seat adjustment with memory function, lumbar support, and a massage function. Standard equipment includes an interaction airbag between the driver's seat and front passenger seat.
The X2 comes with two-zone automatic climate control, the navigation system Maps, a Sport leather steering wheel, automatic tailgate operation, four USB-C ports, a 12V power socket in both the centre console and the boot, and an increased number of driver assistance systems and digital services.
Newly structured equipment packages enable targeted individualisation of the car, with options such as a mirror package, steering wheel heating, and the Harman Kardon Sound System.
The iX2 xDrive30 is an all-electric variant with a system output of 230 kW/313 hp and system torque of 494 Nm. The iX2 xDrive30 accelerates from 0 to 100kph in 5.6 seconds and has a range of 417 – 449km in the WLTP cycle.
The new X2 sDrive20i and sDrive18d models feature efficient petrol and diesel engines, with a seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch as standard.
The compact SAC chassis technology provides a balance between sporty handling and long-distance comfort, with a long wheelbase, wider tracks, and targeted upgrades to the single-joint spring strut axle and three-link rear axle.
Near-actuator wheel slip limitation is standard, and the optional adaptive M suspension features frequency-selective damping, sport steering, and a 15-millimeter drop in ride height.
The X2 offers standard and optional assistance systems for automated driving and parking, including the latest version of the front collision warning system, Cruise Control with brake function, Speed Limit Info, and Lane Departure Warning with lane return.
Optional features include Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Active Navigation, the exit warning function, the Head-Up Display, Surround View, Remote 3D View, Drive Recorder, and Remote Theft Recorder functions.
The BMW Operating System 9 and BMW Digital Premium are available, offering in-car use of all apps available in the customers' respective country on a subscription basis.
The Augmented View function is available as an optional add-on for the cloud-based Maps navigation system, and the Digital Key Plus, ID functionality, and standard smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available.
