All-new MG5 and MG HS previewed in anticipation of local introduction


PETALING JAYA: SAIC Motor Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the official distributor of MG vehicles in Malaysia, has previewed two new petrol-powered models - the MG5 and MG HS - that are slated for the local market.

The MG5 will be a new player in the B-segment sedan market while the HS, offered in Standard and LUX variants, will bring excitement to the hotly contested C-segment sports utility vehicle (SUV) market.

While prices are not disclosed yet, the MG5 has been estimated to cost just under RM100,000, the HS Standard below RM130,000 and the HS LUX under RM150,000.

Available for booking, the vehicles will be covered by a five-year warranty package with unlimited mileage and this also includes an added seven-year unlimited mileage powertrain warranty (engine and transmission).

For colour options, both models will be offered in Nuclear Yellow (MG5 only), Dynamic Red, Arctic White, Black Pearl and Camden Grey.

The MG5, with its fastback design and ducktail spoiler, claims to be the longest and widest sedan in its class.

Measuring 4,675mm long, 1,842mm wide and 1,473mm tall, the MG5 has a wheelbase of 2,680mm.

It will arrive with automatic LED headlights with daytime running lights, LED taillights and 17-inch Tomahawk alloy wheels with 215/50 series tyres.

Suspension are front MacPherson struts and rear torsion beam.

Under the hood of this front-wheel-drive vehicle is a 1,498cc naturally aspirated engine with 114PS at 6,000rpm and 150Nm of torque at 4,500rpm.

It uses an intelligent continuously variable transmission (iCVT) with eight virtual gears.

For an upmarket premium experience within the cabin, the MG5 is fitted with a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, six-speaker sound system and 10.25-inch floating infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

There will also be powered sunroof, black and red colour combination leather upholstery, a six-way powered driver's seat, a 360-degree camera system and three USB ports.

Also included is a single-zone climate control system with a PM2.5 air filter system, rear air vents and cruise control.

To bolster safety, MG Pilot driver assist safety systems will include Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Collision Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

These will be added to the standard safety equipment of six airbags, anti-lock braking system, electronic stability programme, electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control and corner brake control.

As for the HS, both Standard and LUX variants will be powered by a 1.5-litre (1,490cc) turbocharged engine delivering 162PS at 5,600rpm and 250Nm of torque from 1,700 to 4,400rpm.

The front-wheel-drive SUV uses a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

With a 2,720mm wheelbase, the HS is 4,574mm long, 1,876mm wide and 1,664mm tall.

The suspension setup uses front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link.

Starting with the HS Standard, the entry-level variant will get LEDs for the front automatic headlights, daytime runners and rear light clusters.

It will also be equipped with roof rails, a rear spoiler, 17-inch alloys, black leather upholstery, six-way (driver) and four-way (front passenger) powered seats as well as a 463-litre (expandable to 1,287-litre) boot.

The driver will have a 7.0-inch multi-info display, four-speaker sound system and 10.1-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Although the climate controls only provide single-zone adjustability, it does come with a PM2.5 air filter system and rear air vents.

For safety, there's the standard list of six airbags, anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, vehicle dynamic control, corner brake control, active rollover protection, hill-start assist and hill descent control.

As for the range-topping HS LUX, this variant adds on a panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, upsized 18-inch Diamond Cut alloys, red brake callipers, and enlarged 12.3-inch Virtual Display that links to the 360-degree camera system.

Along with the MG iSMART system (which allows for added connectivity functions with the vehicle), there are also sports seats, Super Sport Mode, paddle-shifters, sports pedals, automatic wipers, six-speaker sound system, dual-zone climate controls and a 64-theme ambient lighting system

The MG Pilot safety systems is also included and this package added Front Collision Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Door Opening Warning.

The MG5 and HS will make their first public appearance at selected MG Motor dealer showrooms.

Those interested in the MG5 can catch it in Petaling Jaya (Aug 23-26), Puchong (Aug 30- Sept 2), Klang (Sept 6-9), Muar (Sept 13-17) and Melaka (Sept 20-23).

The HS can be viewed at Glenmarie and Juru (Aug 23-26), Cheras and Chan Sow Lin (Aug 30 - Sept 2), Klang and Shah Alam (Sept 6-9), Plentong and Skudai (Sept 13-17) and finally at Seremban and Melaka (Sept 20-23).

During the unveiling of the two models, SAIC also gave a sneak peek of the all-new electric roadster Cyberster as a surprise.
