A6 Sportback e-tron shaped to be most aerodynamic Audi ever

INGOLSTADT: The Audi A6 Sportback e-tron boasts a record-breaking aerodynamic Cd value of 0.21, making it Audi’s most aerodynamic vehicle and the leader in its segment within the Volkswagen Group.

The A6 Avant e-tron follows closely with a Cd value of 0.24, placing it at the top of its body segment.

Achieving these values involved over 2,800 simulations and extensive wind tunnel testing, with aerodynamics experts Andreas Lauterbach and Matteo Ghelfi working closely with Audi’s design team to fine-tune every detail.

The aerodynamic optimisation process focused on both form and function. Key elements include the slim greenhouse, sloping roofline, and innovative air curtains.

The lateral breakaway edges at the rear of the A6 Avant e-tron alone improve the range by 8 kilometers. Additionally, the switchblade cool-air intake under the Singleframe adds a 12-kilometer range advantage.

The underfloor design also plays a critical role in achieving the low drag values. Optimised stiffening ribs, radii, and a rear diffuser help reduce turbulence and improve airflow.

Special attention was given to the underfloor for both the Sportback and Avant models, which required different approaches due to their varying shapes.

Wheel design is another crucial factor in improving aerodynamics. Special 19-inch and 20-inch aero wheels were developed, along with a 21-inch wheel featuring aero blades made from plastic.

These wheels are engineered to minimise turbulence and optimise airflow around the vehicle.
