10 cars crushed after building beam collapses, say cops
By THE STAR | 16 August 2023KUALA LUMPUR: At least 10 cars were crushed when a building beam collapsed at Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park here.
Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Amihizam Abdul Shukor said they were alerted about the incident at around 10.40pm on Tuesday.
"Fire and Rescue Department, police and Civil Defence Force personnel responded to the incident.
"We immediately cordoned off the area to allow authorities to inspect the building," he told reporters at the scene.
He said initial checks revealed that part of a building beam collapsed and damaged 10 vehicles that were parked there.
"The building affected is a commercial building which was not occupied at the time of the incident.
"As a precautionary measure, we conducted checks on all five floors of the building to ensure nobody was inside," he said, adding that there were no reports of injuries so far.
The building is closed to the public until further notice.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Building Control Department director Norizan Sulaiman said that preliminary investigations showed possible construction flaws in the building but this could only be determined after a thorough investigation by the Malaysian Institute of Public Works (Ikram).
“I cannot say for sure because we don’t want to speculate. There may be some issues with the building’s integrity."
Tenants and office workers on the first and second floor can only go in and remove important documents and have to work elsewhere for the time being, she added.
