Volvo EX90 ready for customer deliveries, ES90 on the horizons
By CARSIFU | 06 September 2024GOTHENBURG: Volvo chose the Sept 4 reveal of the refreshed XC90 to announce that the electric version, the EX90, is ready to be delivered to customers.
Following its world debut in November 2022, the EX90 production was delayed to deal with software glitches. Apparently, it's all sorted out and the car is ready to hit the road.
Production of the EX90 began earlier this year at Volvo’s plant near Charleston, South Carolina, which has the capacity to produce up to 150,000 vehicles annually.
Retailers in the United States and Europe are starting to receive the EX90. The first customer deliveries are expected before the end of this month, with plans to expand distribution to additional markets between the fourth quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025.
Volvo has made significant investments in this facility, including the expansion of the body and paint shops and the addition of a state-of-the-art battery pack production line, ensuring the plant is equipped to support the company's transition to electric vehicles.
The EX90 represents Volvo’s commitment to setting new standards in safety, sustainability, and technology.
Designed as the first Volvo car powered by a core computing system, the EX90 uses the NVIDIA DRIVE platform, combined with the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm Technologies and Volvo’s in-house developed software.
This system integrates and manages key functions such as safety, infotainment, and battery management, enhancing the overall driving experience.
Equipped with Google built-in, the EX90 features a range of sensors, including radars, cameras, and lidar supplied by Luminar, enhancing safety through real-time data collection and processing.
The vehicle’s always-on 5G connection and regular over-the-air software updates allow continuous improvement of the car’s features, making the EX90 adaptable and upgradable over time.
The EX90 offers a driving range of up to 600km on a single charge and is built to be Volvo’s safest car, equipped with next-generation passive and active safety technologies informed by a comprehensive set of sensors.
It is also the first Volvo model to feature bi-directional charging, allowing owners to contribute to grid stability and promote renewable energy use.
In addition, the EX90 debuts the Abbey Road Studios Mode, available with the optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system, enhancing the in-car sound experience by replicating iconic studio acoustics.
ES90 electric sedan
Volvo is also working on an electric version of its mid-sized sedan.
At the EX90 updates, Volvo also announced that ES90 would be officially revealed in March 2025 in Stockholm.
The ES90 is set to complement the current S90 during the company’s transition to electric vehicles, according to Car and Driver.
The motoring publication said the ES90 would use the same platform as the EX90 EV SUV and is expected to use the same 111.0-kWh battery pack.
will likely offer both single- and dual-motor configurations, with the latter providing all-wheel drive. While the official range is not confirmed, it is anticipated to meet or exceed the EX90 range.
Slightly taller and wider than the petrol-powered S90, the ES90 also features a longer wheelbase. Production of the ES90 is scheduled to begin in May 2024 in China, although leaked documents suggest that initial models have already been produced. The ES90 will compete with the BMW i5, Mercedes-Benz EQE, and the upcoming Audi A6 e-tron.
Car and Driver also said ES90’s pricing is projected to start at around US$65,000, reaching up to US$75,000 depending on trim and options, positioning it as a premium offering in Volvo's lineup.
