Omoda and Jaecoo introduce Super Hybrid System (SHS) in UK

LONDON: Chinese marques Omoda and Jaecoo (stylised as OMODA&JAECOO) have unveiled the Super Hybrid System (SHS) as the new identity for their advanced plug-in hybrid platform in the UK.

Leading the way, the Jaecoo 7 SHS, now available for purchase, is the first model to feature this system.

It boasts a WLTP fuel efficiency of 171km/l and a range of 1,198km. Unlike typical PHEV systems, the SHS ensures the electric battery remains charged and never drops to 0%.

Developed using third-generation hybrid technology from parent company Chery Group, Omoda & Jaecoo’s SHS has been specifically adapted to meet the needs of the UK market.

With the SHS, Omoda & Jaecoo have combined the convenience of fuel with the driving experience of pure electric power in the Jaecoo 7 SHS (replacing the existing PHEV tag). The result is a vehicle that offers ultra-high thermal efficiency, ultra-long endurance mileage, ultra-low carbon emissions (23 g/km), and ultra-high battery safety that is class-leading in the automotive sector.

The Jaecoo 7 SHS powertrain comprises three key parts.

The first is the fifth-generation 1.5-litre TDGI petrol engine with 105 kW (143 bhp) and 215 Nm of torque. This highly efficient engine features six core technologies to help maximise fuel consumption and driving performance. These innovations are: Deep Miller cycle; i-HEC internal combustion; i-HTM intelligent thermal management system; HTC efficient turbocharging; i-LS intelligent lubrication and HiDS high dilution.

Coupled with the Jaecoo 7 SHS’ engine, the hybrid transmission boasts four core technologies: a quad-core dual electronic control MCU; IGBT double-sided water cooling; a high-efficiency dual motor and hydraulic split cooling. The gearbox also enables smooth and comfortable performance and also ensures that fuel efficiency is maximised.

Finally, the 18.3 kW high energy density, high-performance lithium iron phosphate battery pack in the Jaecoo 7 SHS helps the car achieve an electric-only driving range of 90km. The battery pack features a triple-layer design to maximise impact resistance.

The total power of the Omoda & Jaecoo SHS is 255 kW (347 bhp) and 525Nm of torque. The powertrain will enable the Jaecoo 7 SHS to accelerate from zero to 100kph in 8.5 seconds and from zero to 50kph in just 3.8 seconds. These times are faster than comparative hybrid powertrains, as well as equivalent pure petrol-powered vehicles.

In November 2024, prices were announced for the JAECOO 7, a premium SUV that will come with a choice of petrol or plug-in hybrid (SHS) powertrains, priced from £29,435 (RM163,000) and £35,065 (RM194,000) respectively.

The hybrid has a 60-litre fuel tank, which contributes to its claimed range and fuel economy.

The SUV combines off-road ability, performance and efficiency with a stylish exterior design and a tech-rich interior. Front- and four-wheel-drive configurations are available. The Jaecoo 7 SHS is available to order now, with UK deliveries starting from Jan 31.

Future Omoda & Jaecoo models to feature the SHS drivetrain will be announced in the coming months.

Chery had announced last year its intentions to expand into the United Kingdom to offer a cheaper alternative to the Range Rover series.

Jaguar Land Rover has some association with Chery. It is owned by India's Tata Motors Ltd, which also has a joint venture with Chery in China.
