Chery Tiggo 7 Pro: Powerful, premium specs, impressive value

THE Chery Tiggo 7 Pro 5-seater sports utility vehicle (SUV) is another impressive value-for-money offering from Chery Auto Malaysia, packing a powerful powertrain, premium features and advanced safety technology at a attractive price tag.
The Tiggo 7 Pro enters the C-segment SUV market here, where it is pitted against the likes of the Proton X70, Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5.
There’s plenty of muscle and performance here, with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol direct injection (TGDI) engine, producing 197ps and torque of 290Nm and paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch Transmission (DCT).
While fuel economy is rated at 7.0 litres per 100km, we never achieved anything near that, as we are quite heavy-footed and impatient drivers, especially when piloting powerful turbocharged cars that handle competently.
Priced at RM123,800, the Tiggo 7 Pro shares quite a number of nice appointments seen in the RM159,800 three-row Tiggo 8 Pro.
These include the eight-speaker Sony Premium audio system, a 50W wireless charger, front ventilated and powered seats, driver’s seat with memory, electric panoramic sunroof, Apple Carplay and Android Auto (wireless), and the 24.6-inch large curved dual screens infotainment system display, and a powered tailgate.
Another feature shared with the Tiggo 8 Pro is a deep centre storage box (between the front seats) that includes a cooling air vent, perfect for keeping drinks or snacks cool during long trips.
Also, a first-in-class 540-degree camera system makes parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces a breeze, and reduces the stress of parking in busy areas.
Like the Tiggo 8 Pro, the dashboard is dominated by the one-piece dual screens, consisting of a touchscreen for vehicle settings and infotainment functions, and another screen behind the steering wheel for vehicle and driving data.
The interior has a high-quality ambience, with leatherette upholstery, polished metallic surfaces, soft touch materials and Burmester-styled audio speaker covers.
We like the solid and comfortable seat cushions which provided nice support for longer journeys.
The front vanity mirrors with illumination is another plus point for us.
Rear seats offer ample headroom for 1.7-metres adults.
And just like the Tiggo 8 Pro, starting a drive in the Tiggo 7 Pro is quite seamless – approach the car with the key fob, its side mirrors swing out, and doors unlock.
As you get into the driver’s seat, the dual screen comes to life, a short animated display is shown, accompanied by dramatic music.
The infotainment system is activated automatically, and Android Auto (wireless) connects quickly.
Step on the brake, press the engine start-stop button, and fasten the driver’s seatbelt (otherwise, the Auto Hold function won’t release).
Pull down the space-saving short gear lever into D, and start driving.
Its 1.6-litre turbocharged engine is punchy, and we found a healthy dose of torque on tap, and overtaking manoeuvres on highways are executed with confidence.
The seven-speed DCT is generally smooth, while the steering is light yet precise.
Body roll is kept in check, and the MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension set-up strikes a commendable balance between comfort and control.
On less than ideal surfaces, the suspension set-up soak up bumps with aplomb, and road imperfections are readily absorbed.
Fitted with Atlas A51 SUV tyres sized 225/55 R18, the Tiggo 7 Pro remains decently composed when the road gets twisty, with minimal body roll and a confidence-inspiring level of grip.
While it’s not a sports car, the SUV’s dynamic abilities are far removed from a soft and wallowy crossover.
The combination of a responsive powertrain, well-tuned suspension, and accurate steering deliver pleasant and comfortable motoring experiences.
The impressive cabin noise insulation is another standout, as unwanted external noise is well muffled.
The all-round disc brake set-up delivers progressive stopping power, and red brake calipers add a sporty touch.
While the brake pedal feel could be sharper, it’s a minor quibble in an exceptional package.
The comfortable seats, well-insulated cabin, and compliant ride make this a capable and enjoyable SUV to drive, and soak up long distances with ease.
We think that the Tiggo 7 Pro ticks all the right boxes for those who want a well-crafted C-segment SUV that’s more accessibly priced, and yet, delivers a premium driving experience.
