Kia EV9: Prime cut

Kia's foray into the electric vehicle market with the EV9 marks a significant move upmarket for the brand.

Launched locally in June, the EV9 is Kia’s largest and most expensive offering, priced at RM374,668 for the six-seater variant.

It sits squarely in the premium SUV segment, competing with established European brands. A seven-seater is also offered for RM5,000 less.

STAR

Boxy confidence

At over five metres long and nearly two metres wide, the EV9 has terrific road presence.

Its bold, boxy design is a departure from the softer lines seen on many competitors.

The front features Kia’s “Digital Tiger Face” with slim LED headlights and an illuminated grille, lending it a futuristic, somewhat rugged appeal.

While its angular looks may not suit everyone, it certainly makes a statement.

Built on Kia’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which underpins models like the EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, the EV9 is designed to make the most of its flat-floor layout.

Voluminous comfort

Inside, it’s spacious and modern.

The six-seater version features a 2-2-2 seating arrangement, with second-row captain’s chairs offering an exceptional level of comfort.

The four “Relaxion” seats in the first two rows recline with powered leg rests, while the driver seat also includes a massage function.

STAR

The third row is best reserved for children or short trips, as space is tight compared to the generous legroom up front.

The cabin design is minimalist but premium, with eco-friendly materials and a sleek dashboard dominated by a wide digital display that integrates the driver’s instrument cluster and infotainment system.

It’s a clean, tech-forward interior that emphasises functionality over flash, though some features — such as the oddly placed Start/Stop button on the gear-shifting stalk — may take some getting used to.

Another divisive feature are digital side mirrors. While they offer wide views, and the rearview mirror can switch to a digital feed, judging depth can be tricky.

Where the EV9 excels is in practicality.

The cargo area is flexible, with enough space for small items when all three rows are in use.

Fold down the third row, and you’ll have plenty of room for larger luggage.

Second row can be folded almost flat, expanding the load space further. Kia has also added a sizeable frunk for more storage options.

STAR

The EV9 has plenty of safety kit and comes equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

The suite includes autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot detection, lane-keeping assist, and rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist.

A standout feature is Safe Exit Assist, which prevents passengers from opening doors if an approaching vehicle from behind is detected — ideal in a busy urban setting.

STAR

Responsive drive

Powering the EV9 is a pair of electric motors generating 380hp and 700Nm of torque, making it feel quick and responsive, especially in city traffic.

The instant torque typical of electric vehicles gives it a punchy feel off the line, but this isn’t a sporty SUV.

The EV9’s weight becomes evident when cornering, and while the suspension is tuned for comfort, it lacks the sharp handling of smaller SUVs.

On highways, the ride is smooth and quiet, with little road noise, though the 21-inch wheels can create some tyre noise on rougher surfaces.

STAR

One of the more practical features of the EV9 is its one-pedal driving system, which uses regenerative braking to slow the vehicle when lifting off the accelerator.

It’s intuitive, particularly useful in stop-and-go traffic, and it helps to extend the vehicle’s range by recovering energy.

On the topic of range, the EV9’s 800V architecture supports ultra-fast charging, which can ease any range anxiety on long trips.

While the EV9 also offers a Terrain Mode for light off-roading, its 177mm ground clearance makes it better suited for rough city roads or the occasional dirt track than serious off-road adventures.

Last thoughts

As the most expensive Kia in town, the EV9 is positioned in a price range usually occupied by premium European brands, making it a bold move for the brand.

Whether it justifies its price tag depends on what buyers value most.

The EV9 offers a roomy and well-equipped interior, strong electric performance, and advanced safety features, making it a sensible option for families seeking a big and practical electric SUV.

STAR

The EV9 is an enticing package that blends space, technology, and electric performance in a head-turning, modern design.

Kia has proven before it can compete in the premium segment.

Whether it can sway buyers from European brands with the EV9 remains to be seen, but this hunky marvel makes a strong case for itself as a capable, high-tech family SUV.
