Husqvarna Svartpilen 401: Inspiring retro design
By A. NACHI | 27 December 2024THE Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 is a motorcycle that embodies the essence of minimalist design, combined with modern performances, appealing to riders who seek style, agility, and functionality.
Its striking aesthetics are inspired by Scandinavian simplicity, making it a standout in the neo-retro motorcycle segment.
The Svartpilen 401 is not just about good looks; it offers a riding experience that caters to both urban commuters and weekend adventurers, making it a versatile choice for many riders.
The Svartpilen 401 test unit was provided by Welly World Cycle of Sg. Buloh which is also the only authorised Husqvarna dealer in the Klang Valley.
The bike's design is undoubtedly one of its strongest assets where Husqvarna has adopted a less-is-more approach.
It removes unnecessary elements to leave a motorcycle that is raw and purposeful.
The clean lines, exposed trellis frame and circular LED headlight evoke a sense of rugged sophistication.
The blacked-out bodywork, paired with a subtle mix of matte and gloss finishes, exudes a premium feel that is hard to ignore.
The tank rack, which integrates seamlessly into the design, adds a touch of adventure-ready practicality, allowing riders to strap small items securely.
The bike is a perfect fit for a role in movies like The Matrix.
The ergonomics are designed for upright riding position, thanks to wide handlebars and moderate seat height of 835mm.
The seat is narrow, while aesthetic in line minimalist philosophy, could be a challenge for riders who spend long hours on saddles.
Hence the saddle is suited for medium-short rides rather than marathons.
At the heart of the Svartpilen 401 lies a 373cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, shared with KTM’s 390 Duke.
This powerhouse produces 44hp and 37Nm of torque, with a lightweight chassis weighing just under 160kg.
The result is a bike that feels zippy and responsive.
The engine’s linear power delivery and strong mid-range torque make it versatile, whether I am darting through city streets or tackling winding mountain roads.
On the highway, the Svartpilen 401 holds reasonably well and comfortably cruises at 110-120kph while still have enough power in reserve for overtaking slower vehicles.
However, the single-cylinder engine’s high-revving nature becomes apparent at higher speeds, where mild vibrations start creeping into the foot pegs.
The absence of wind protection was definitely uncomfortable when I was riding at top speed.
While it’s not a dedicated touring machine, it can handle short highway runs without much fuss.
In Kuala Lumpur city centre, the Svartpilen 401 truly comes alive.
The compact dimension and lightweight frame make it incredibly nimble, allowing me to weave through traffic with ease.
The torquey engine ensures quick acceleration from a stop, making stop-and-go traffic painless.
The Svartpilen 401 offers decent fuel efficiency, averaging around 25-30km per litre, which adds to its practicality as a daily commuter.
When it comes to twisty roads in Fraser's Hill, the Svartpilen is in its element.
Its agile handling and strong mid-range torque make it a joy to ride around the bends.
The wide handlebar provides excellent leverage, and the lightweight frame responds instantly to my inputs, giving me the confidence to push harder through hairpins.
However, the single-cylinder engine strained a bit during the long uphill climbs, especially when the bike is fully loaded or carrying a pillion.
That said, occasional spirited s rides on Fraser’s offers an exhilarating experience.
Featuring WP Apex components with USD forks at the front and a monoshock at the rear, the Svartpilen 401 is tuned for a balance between sporty handling and everyday comfort.
On street roads, the suspension performs admirably, soaking up minor imperfections and providing a planted feel during spirited riding.
On poorly maintained roads, the suspension’s stiffness becomes noticeable but not a deal breaker.
Meanwhile on off-roads, the Svartpilen 401 offers some capability, thanks to its slightly longer suspension travel and 19-inch front wheel.
While it’s not a hardcore off-roader, I am able to handle light trails and gravel roads without much trouble.
The upright riding position and wide handle bar allowed me to take charge of the bike when standing up on the pegs.
The brakes are by ByBre (a subsidiary of Brembo), with a 320mm disc at the front and a 230mm disc at the rear.
The dual-channel Bosch ABS system is standard and works flawlessly, providing strong and predictable stopping power in a variety of conditions.
Despite its edgy appearance, the Svartpilen 401 is a surprisingly practical motorcycle.
The addition of features like the tank rack, slipper clutch and fuel efficiency makes it a good option to consider for daily commuting.
The RM32,800 Svartpilen 401 is a stylish and capable motorcycle that caters to a niche audience.
Its minimalist design, premium components, and engaging performance make it a compelling option for riders who value aesthetics and agility.
